Indiana hosts Long Beach State in weekend series #iubase

FINAL: Long Beach State 12, Indiana 5. The Hoosiers have now lost four straight games at home. Long Beach State’s Luke Rasmussen added his second home run — and the Dirtbags’ third of the game — in the top half of the inning. Nick Ramos had an RBI single in the bottom half.

EIGHTH INNING: Garrett Hampson added an RBI double against Morris to give Long Beach State a seven-run lead. IU, meanwhile, hasn’t gotten a runner past first base since its two-run fifth inning. LONG BEACH STATE 11, INDIANA 4.

SEVENTH INNING: After a perfect seventh inning, Morris has retired seven in a row. But the Hoosiers still have a lot of ground to make up in a short span of time. Logan Sowers mustered only a two-out single for IU in the bottom half of the inning. LONG BEACH STATE 10, INDIANA 4.

SIXTH INNING: Morris retired the side in order and pinch hitter Christopher Lowe picked up a one-out single in the bottom half. LONG BEACH STATE 10, INDIANA 4.

FIFTH INNING: Christian Morris came on to start the inning and gave up a one-out RBI single to Alex DeGoti. The Hoosiers got out of the inning thanks to right fielder Will Nolden, who snagged a fly ball and quickly fired home to nab Joey Sanchez at the plate. IU got two runs back in the bottom half on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Scott Donley and a sacrifice fly by Logan Sowers. LONG BEACH STATE 10, INDIANA 4.

FOURTH INNING: It all got away from Jake Kelzer and, by extension, the Hoosiers. The Dirtbags hung eight runs on the board in the top of the fourth, including a grand slam by Long Beach No. 9 hitter Eric Hutting. Kelzer was responsible for seven of the eight runs, leaving with one out after his command of the zone eluded him. The inning started with back-to-back doubles by Zack Rivera and Brock Lundquist — the latter driving in Rivera for the Dirtbags’ second run of the night. Kelzer loaded the bases on a walk and hit batsmen before giving up an RBI single to Joey Sanchez and walking Alex DeGoti on five pitches to force in Long Beach’s fourth run of the game.

Enter reliever Even Bell, who fell into a 3-1 count against Hutting before the Dirtbags’ catcher belted a fastball over the Indiana bullpen in left field. Rivera added the final run of the inning on a double to centerfield.

Craig Dedelow delivered a two-run double in the bottom half of the frame to get Indiana on the board. LONG BEACH STATE 9, INDIANA 2.

THIRD INNING: Back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning got Jake Kelzer all pumped up. Kelzer struck out Dirtbags leadoff man Garrett Hampson to finish the top of the third and pumped his fist as he walked off the mound. Aside from the second-inning homer, Kelzer has settled in with four strikeouts and 44 pitches, including 29 for strikes. Casey Rodrigue hustled into second on a two-out double in the bottom half after lining a ball to left field. It was an aggressive play from the IU second baseman, who forced his way into scoring position for Nick Ramos. Ramos struck out looking at a 2-2 fastball on the outside corner to end the inning. LONG BEACH STATE 1, INDIANA 0.

SECOND INNING: Long Beach State strikes first on a solo home run by Luke Rasmussen, who smoked a 1-0 pitch off the scoreboard in left centerfield. Craig Dedelow’s two-out single was IU’s first hit of the game, but he was stranded at first when Will Nolden struck out looking at a fastball off the corner of the plate to end the inning. LONG BEACH STATE 1, INDIANA 0.

FIRST INNING: Jake Kelzer needed a few pitches to find his command, but ultimately got out of a perfect first inning on 17 pitches. Indiana went down in order in the bottom half. LONG BEACH STATE 0, INDIANA 0.

PREGAME: It’s not a conference series, but it could be a big weekend for Indiana. The Hoosiers host the Dirtbags of Long Beach State for a three-game series at Bart Kaufman Field, where IU can continue building on its postseason resume ahead of next weekend’s crucial season-ending series against Ohio State. Both Indiana and Long Beach are fighting to get onto the NCAA Tournament bubble, so there will be much on the line over the next three days in Bloomington.

  1. “Dirtbags” is a complimentary term, the unofficial nickname given to the Long Beach State baseball team. Per the school’s official athletic website… “Although, like all other Long Beach State sports teams, the baseball team is officially known as the 49ers, players and fans alike generally prefer the “Dirtbags.”

  2. Was anyone else perplexed by a photo that happened to pop up in the Scoop sidebar from the Spring football game….? Sorta caught me off-guard as it caught my eye while I was scrolling to look at “Recent Comments.”

There’s a whistle….there’s Wilson giving a gentle caress to a microphone…and not sure ….and something blurry …and…..and…. the previous play is still under review….?

  3. Sounds like they gave our Hoosiers a Long Beach-slapping…Life’s a beach and then you die…My wife is an honorary graduate of the school… No matter what subject we’re on, somehow the discussion turns and always finds her in my ears with nothing other than her Long Beach State…

  4. I asked my wife if Long Beach State ever makes it to Happy Valley…..? She said it would take a diamond for starters… don’t even think of going to the on-deck circle…

  5. “There are pieces that furnish a team….and those that define it.”
