Report: Thon Maker to stay in 2016 class #iubb

Forget about Thon Maker fitting into Indiana’s plans for next season.

Maker will not reclassify into the 2015 class, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Brozello, choosing to return to Ontario’s Orangeville Prep for his final year of high school. Maker had been considering enrolling at an American university midway through the 2015-16 season.

Borzello writes that part of Maker’s decision centers on the ability to play his brother, Matur, a highly-regarded member of the 2017 class. Matur also has an Indiana offer.

Indiana and Arizona State are reportedly the two schools making the most consistent contact with Maker’s camp.

“It’s helped him tremendously,” Maker’s guardian Ed Smith told ESPN. “Going into the Hoop Summit (in April), he was staying up until two, three o’clock in the morning. He wasn’t playing well. Once he knew (moving back to 2016) was a possibility, he got back into a rhythm. He’s feeling good. He’s playing really, really well right now.”

Indiana has one scholarship available for the upcoming season.

  1. Not saying Thon couldn’t have made us scary good come March. (Queue the Crean slams about finishing weak.) It’s disappointing on the one hand. On the other, it’s a bit of a relief to know that we won’t half to deal with a whole new dynamic mid-term. And… HOPEFULLY… ACHEM… we’ll still have a scholarship for him next year. Let’s not screw this up.

  2. I am sure Crean would find a way to have a scholarship for Maker in 2016. The real question is, with him classifying for 2016, did IU miss its window of opportunity. You can bet this now brings, Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and many more back into contention. So for the coming season, what does IU have for size and ability when Bryant is not on the floor? Wonder if Crean is still looking at any other last minute options?

  3. Odd recruiting saga for sure and my guess is grades played a role in it. This kid will be an Indiana hoosier if he wants to be there is no doubt. My guess is crean adds someone to the roster for next year. Guys like Remy…April…and Priller are told up front what their future holds if they choose to be a hoosier. It’s an opportunity THEY choose to take part of. Hey we need a last minute big man…are you in or out? Obviously a kid like April is realistic enough to know when your a last minute grab for a team like indiana needing a big…it may not pan out.
