Feeney named to Outland Trophy watch list

Another preseason honor has rolled Dan Feeney’s way, the latest arriving as a spot on the Outland Trophy watch list.

The Football Writers Association of America released the watch list Friday morning for the Outland Trophy, which recognizes the top offensive or defensive interior lineman in the country. Earlier this summer, Feeney was named a first team All-Big Ten selection and fourth team All-American on Phil Steele’s 2015 preseason team.

In 24 career starts at right guard — a span of 1,736 snaps — Feeney has allowed only one sack.

The Orland Park, Ill., native started all 12 games in 2014 and led the offensive line with 80 knockdowns. With running back Tevin Coleman storming out of the backfield, Indiana set a program single-season record with 3,163 rushing yards last season.

The watch list will be trimmed to six or seven semifinalists on Nov. 19. Three finalists will be named five days later. The winner will be announced on ESPN on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 10.

Feeney is one of 11 Big Ten players named to the Outland watch list. You can view the full list after the jump.

  1. That’s great news for Dan Feeney, and for IU football. Feeney is quite deserving of this honor. Without taking anything away from Mr. Feeney, though, I would have thought Jason Spriggs would have been in that conversation as well.
I calculate 57 days until season opener and, I for one can’t wait! I am excited for IU football this season. Can’t enough ‘scoop’ on football. So, is there any thought on Ralph Green being re-instated, and what can we expect in regards to number of games he might miss, if in fact, he is allowed back?
Finally, is Zander Diamont currently the backup, or is he going to be red-shirted this year? If Diamont is red-shirted that leaves Danny Cameron and an incoming freshman as QB backup, is that right?
    Go IU!

  2. The Outland is for interior lineman, Spriggs is a LT.
Feeney is no doubt damn good and deserving of the national recognition but I have my eye on 4 others who this year will be hitting their stride with talent and confidence and get significant time in big play situations. Tim Gardner, Wes Martin, Delroy Baker and Wes Rogers are not brand new but young talented guys Coach Frey likes to push into the prime time envelope. All can play multiple positions. Because of Frey IU this year will have 1 of the strongest and deepest OL’s in the country. Wilson being an x-OL man himself and x-OL coach will with Glass do everything possible to keep Frey in Bloomington no matter what other offers come along. POTMFB-+++-GO IU

  3. Great to hear Freeny is on the list and it shows the level IU OL has reached. Like Wolfer I am excited about this year’s team. I would think Zander is the backup QB but will be redshirted if he isn’t needed to take over the team like last year.

IU’s offense should be a beast again this year like the 2013 offense. We have a strong OL with two new receivers, one a JR college star, to go along with young receivers that learned on the field. The RBs look good in the Spring game and that didn’t include the UAB runner that transferred in. The defense continues to improve which should lead to controlling offenses this coming year. We return our two kickers so the special teams should be solid.

I hope this team has a special season that surprises most people. I think if Nate hadn’t been hurt last year the team would have won seven games leading people to have high hopes this year. I hope they use the lessons of last year to win more games than expected and go on to a bowl game.
