Feeney takes spot on Lombardi Award watch list

Another week, another preseason honor for Dan Feeney.

The Indiana right guard was named to the Lombardi Award watch list on Tuesday, marking the fourth time this summer Feeney has been singled out for recognition. Eligibility for the Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. The candidates earned a place on the watch list by earning All-American honors, being named to their respective all-conference teams or receiving 2015 preseason honors.

Last week, Feeney was named to the Outland Trophy watch list for interior linemen. Feeney has also been recognized as a First Team All-Big Ten selection and a Fourth Team All-American on Phil Steele’s preseason teams. The junior has allowed only one sack in 24 career starts at right guard — a span of 1,736 snaps. Feeney started all 12 games in 2014 and led the offensive line with 80 knockdowns.

The Lombardi watch list will be periodically updated before it is whittled down to 12 semi-finalists. A winner will be announced on Dec. 9 in Houston, Texas.

  1. This is a great list for Freeny to get on but it also shows the improving level of IU talent. A strong OL is the first requirement for a good football team and IU has offensive talent to utilize a good OL. It will be fun this year to see how Freeny and the rest of the team do.
