Crawford earns Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week honor

Indiana true freshman safety Jonathan Crawford earned Big Ten co-Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday. He is the first Hoosier to collect the award since linebacker Tegray Scales on Sept 22, 2014.

Crawford became the first IU true freshman since Mitchell Evans in 2007 to record a pair of interceptions in a single game as the Hoosiers defeated Western Kentucky, 38-35. Both of the interceptions led to touchdowns. The first stopped a Western Kentucky drive at the Indiana 3-yard line, and on the very next pass by WKU quarterback Brandon Doughty, Crawford collected his second pick and returned it 15 yards to the Hilltoppers 22-yard line.

The Largo, Fla., native has started all three games this season. He is third on the team with 18 tackles, 10 solo, and first with the two interceptions.

  1. Congratulations to Crawford. The honor and recognition is well deserved. Clearly, his two INTs saved IU’s butt last Saturday. I hope his success will give him and his defensive teammates the confidence necessary to improve their overall performance in the weeks ahead.

  2. Congratulations to Crawford. I hope the coaches start sitting players that aren’t doing well and only play the ones who have learned during the preseason for B1G. The time to let them play their way to learning how to play in college is over. To watch Williams stand there at the end of the half and watch his man run past him. Even my high school players knew to stay deep in the final seconds of the half not watch the receiver. There are enough good DBs on the team to not play the ones constantly making mistakes plus it would make the really good players get better as they get more reps in practice. Good luck to the team to go 4-0 this week.

  3. Very well deserved. This young man has been bringing it since week 1. Blocked FG & TD saving tackle. He has the physical tools to be special in this league & he’s gaining the experience/confidence to continue his development. I’ll say it again, Jonathan Crawford=Ball Hawk. Go Hoosiers!!!
