IU will open football season on a Thursday #iufb

Thursday night football is returning to Indiana’s schedule in 2016.

The school announced today that its season opener at Florida International will be played on Thursday, Sept. 1 in Miami. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3. IU last played a Thursday night game in 2013, when it beat down Indiana State 73-35.

This year’s opener represents a return game in Indiana’s series with FIU. The Hoosiers beat the Panthers, 36-22, at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 12. IU and FIU are also due to meet in Bloomington in 2017 and again in Miami in 2018.

Indiana will play seven home games this season, beginning with its Memorial Stadium opener against Ball State on Sept. 10.

  1. Any news yet on TV coverage for this game? Since the game is in Miami, I know BTN does not have any rights. Hopefully, this will be a ESPNU game?

  2. Assuming they win this first game, it will be good for them to have nine days to rest and make adjustments before game #2.

  3. Playing FIU helps IU exposure which in turn helps IU recruiting in Florida. I haven’t heard but the Thursday night games are almost always on one of the ESPN channels.
