Indiana rolls to victory at Michigan, 80-67

Indiana coach Tom Crean called time out at the 14:30 mark of the first half, furious with the lack of defense that had just allowed Michigan to open up a 15-4 lead.

Whatever was said in that huddle awoke the slumbering Hoosiers, who surged back into the game on a 10-2 run of their own before closing the opening half with a 25-0 run en route to an 80-67 win over Wolverines.

Yogi Ferrell had 17 points and nine assists to pace three Hoosiers in double figures. Robert Johnson added 16 points, and freshman OG Anunoby tied a career high with 11 points. Nine players scored in all for IU.

Indiana used one of its patented offensive explosions in the game-defining run, but the defense was equally impressive as Michigan did not score in the final 9:05 of the first half, missing its final 12 shots and committing three turnovers.

An Anunoby 3 early in the second half made the run 28-0 before the Wolverines’ Duncan Robinson scored to end the drought 10 minutes and 29 seconds.

From there, Indiana cruised to victory, improving to 19-4 overall and 9-1 in Big Ten play.

The game also featured the return of former Wolverine Max Bielfeldt to Crisler Arena, as the grad transfer entered the game to warm but restrained applause. Bielfeldt hit a 3 on his first shot attempt, finishing with five points and seven rebounds for the game.

  1. I try to be civil on here, but I guess Michigan is an Ivy League school. It is about time folks suck it up and give coach Crean and his team the credit they deserve. I am not saying iu will win the National Title, but this is a very good basketball team. If that is being an apologist I guess that is me. I feel better now!!

  2. That was simply one of the most satisfying performances of IU basketball that I have seen in a long time. Sweet!!!

  3. The last ten minutes of the first half may have been some of the best basketball IU has played for some time. Michigan was totally befuddled, which is surprising given they played at home. I liked to see IU make the appropriate changes in order to come back from 11 pts down. Coaches have to realize the the offense runs so much better when Troy Williams is on the wing AND NOT when Troy is playing point guard. Tonight was IU’s best game of the season in my opinion. Now let’s go get the next game like tonight. Go Hoosiers! !

  4. Great performance tonight. OG is starting to look like Victor O. Not highly rated but with very good skills and a high basketball IQ. He is a difference maker. Another strong game for Yogi and great play by Johnson. Good early timeout by Crean. Still don’t like Williams and Hartman handling the ball in traffic, but no complaints tonight and congratulations to the team. Need to avoid a letdown against Penn State. Go IU!

  5. The Hoosiers looked great. Can’t count on 28-0 runs to close the deal. Let’s hope to see them show the grit to win a grinder.
