Hoosier trio in line for off-season surgeries #iubb

Now that Indiana’s season is over, a trio of Hoosiers are expected to seek the medical attention they need.

During an appearance on The Ride with JMV on WFNI 1070 AM in Indianapolis on Monday, IU coach Tom Crean said he expects Robert Johnson (ankle), Collin Hartman (wrist) and Juwan Morgan (shoulder) to undergo respective surgeries this spring. Final determinations — along with timelines for recovery — should become clear during the next few weeks.

Johnson missed four games after suffering a high-ankle sprain on Feb 20 against Purdue. He returned for IU’s first-round win over Chattanooga on March 17, but aggravated the injury two days later against Kentucky. He did not play during Friday’s Sweet 16 loss to North Carolina. Johnson told reporters after the game that the team’s training staff was not satisfied with his progress and declined to clear him.

“The Johnson injury really hurt us,” Crean said. “Especially after he came back in the tournament and got re-injured again. There’s no way he could really push off his foot enough to play any kind of minutes in the game.”

Hartman was also banged up during IU’s NCAA Tournament run. He fell awkwardly on his right wrist in the team’s Big Ten Tournament loss to Michigan and wore a padded brace during Indiana’s final three games.

Between tournament games, Hartman downplayed the significance of the injury and played in all three NCAA Tournament games. Crean revealed Monday that Hartman’s wrist was not merely sore, but fractured.

“It was no accident that he was out there working with his left hand the majority of the time,” Crean said. “It caught up to us a little bit with his shooting, even though he made a 3 the other night.”

Morgan, meanwhile, dealt with a separated shoulder that gave him trouble during IU’s final six games. Morgan recently told reporters that his shoulder has been bothering him for the last two years, but he had a high pain tolerance and experience popping it back in during games.

Early in Friday’s game against the Tar Heels, Morgan was spotted wincing in pain while Dr. Larry Rink tended to his shoulder.

“we have three guys here who are going to have to have surgery in the next few weeks,” Crean said. “That’s a level of toughness these guys are carrying around and I’m unbelievably proud to be a part of it with them.”

  1. If that story does not speak to these player’s toughness and determination, then nothing does. It also speaks to the outcome of the last game of the season. Yes, UNC was a better team that day, but with three key players seriously banged up, now we know why. I’m really proud of how tough these guys fought, especially with those significant injuries.
