IUWBB: Hoosiers fall to Notre Dame, 87-70

Indiana fell to Notre Dame 87-70 in the second round of the NCAA tournament in South Bend on Monday.

IU trailed by only two with 2:40 left in the third quarter, but the Hoosiers eventually succumbed to the scoring power of the No. 1 seed Fighting Irish.

Karlee McBride and Alexis Gassion each led the Hoosiers with 17 points. Kym Royster, Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill each scored 10 points.

It was McBride who kept the Hoosiers in it early, hitting four 3s and scoring 12 points in the first half. Royster was also key, stepping in for Jenn Anderson, who battled foul trouble all night. She also had 10 rebounds, finishing with a double double.

Notre Dame shot 55 percent from the field. While the Hoosiers hit 7-of-16 from beyond the arc, they were hurt by 20 turnovers. The Irish scored 27 points off of those turnovers. Buss finished 3-of-16 from the field.

  1. They did pretty darned good. They came into this season with limited expectations and broke down walls that have stood for decades. Good for you young women.

Thank you very much for turning the corner in women’s basketball.

  2. The coach for the lady Hoosiers has proven to be a good one. Let’s just hope she stays at IU and builds a great program.

  3. The Indiana Women’s Basketball program has achieved a set of terrific milestones with this team and this season’s results. Each of the players, coaches, staff members, etc. deserves recognition and congratulations. Now let’s provide even more help and resources for them to continue to advance nationally! This must become merely the first of many steps forward and upward! GO IU!
