Trending Now: IU basketball news and notes

By the numbers
0 National championships won by a No. 5 seed, which Indiana is this year. Three times a No. 5 seed has reached the championship game.
2 NCAA Tournament wins in an Indiana uniform for the 2015-16 IU roster, both by Yogi Ferrell. Max Bielfeldt won eight NCAA Tournament game with Michigan.
4 Times the Hoosiers have been a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament — 1982, ’94, 2002 and this year. Only once did Indiana not reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Planting the fifth seed
A No. 5 seed is no bargain, despite being the favorite. The fifth seed owns an 80-44 record against the 12th seed, a winning percentage of 64.52 percent. However, the average margin of victory is only 4.1 points. Only four times — 1988, 2000, 2007 and 2015 — has a No. 12 seed failed to win at least one game against a No. 5. In 2014, three No. 12 seeds won the first-round matchup.

Indiana has fared well as a No. 5 seed in its three previous experiences, never losing the opening game. Only the first time in 1982 did the Hoosiers fail to reach the Sweet Sixteen as a No. 5. Clearly the best run as a No. 5 seed came in 2002 when Indiana made it all the way to the national championship game before falling to Maryland. The Hoosiers haven’t been past the Sweet Sixteen since.

Dance party
The IU women’s basketball is headed to the NCAA Tournament for just the fifth time in school history — 1983, 1994, 1995 and 2002. All five of those times the Indiana men’s team also made the tournament. The results have been mixed for the men, who twice made the Sweet Sixteen, once lost in the opening round and most recently reached the national title game in those seasons.

This is the Hoosiers’ first at-large berth in the NCAA since ’95, and they’ll be seeing a familiar opponent in a familiar destination. Ninth-seeded Indiana plays eighth-seeded Georgia, the third time in IU’s five tourney appearances the two will meet. Georgia won the previous meetings in 1983 and 1995. The game will take place in South Bend, where the Hoosiers previously played the Bulldogs in a 1983 second-round game. That was the only NCAA trip that saw the Hoosiers win a game, topping Kentucky in the first round.

If the two in-state schools win their first-round games, then Indiana and Notre Dame could meet in the second round for the first meeting since a 54-51 Hoosiers win on Dec. 3, 2010, in South Bend. The Fighting Irish lead the all-time series, 6-4.
