Indiana appears set for a rematch with North Carolina.

Months after the Tar Heels ended IU’s season in the Sweet 16, IU will host the next meeting between the basketball blue bloods as part of this year’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein reported the IU-UNC matchup along with the rest of the cross-conference slate on Monday evening. Dates, times and television assignments are expected to be officially revealed by the Big Ten at a later date.

This should be one of the premier matchups of the Challenge, given that both IU and UNC are expected to land comfortably in the top 15 to start next season. Carolina blew past IU, 101-86, in a March 25 game that saw Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige combine for 41 points. The Tar Heels advanced to the Final Four in Houston, where they fell to Villanova in the national title game.

Neither Johnson nor Paige will be back for the Heels next season, but nearly all other key pieces are expected to return. That includes versatile forward Justin Jackson and center Kennedy Meeks among them.

Indiana leads the all-time series, 8-6. The Hoosiers lost last year’s Challenge game at Duke, and bring a 6-9 record in the event into the new season. IU and North Carolina were also paired in 2012, with the Hoosiers claiming a decisive 83-59 victory at Assembly Hall.

It’s the latest marquee game added to Indiana’s schedule, and potentially the most noteworthy of the non-conference home slate. The Hoosiers will face Kansas at Pearl Harbor on Nov. 11 and later get Butler in this year’s Crossroads Classic on Dec. 17. Indiana will return to Bankers Life Fieldhouse on New Year’s Eve to begin its three-year series with Louisville.

  1. Sounds like a nice collection for pre-season. I thought the last visit to The Island was IU’s Pearl Harbor. What to expect? Wimpy start to the season? Lost a lot of experience and stability.

  2. Well, that should quiet the critics who claim that IU’s pre-conference schedule is loaded with cupcakes.

  3. Great!!, a real good opponent coming to Assembly Hall for the ticketholders to get to see a big time game in Bloomington for change during the pre Big Ten schedule.

  4. UNC, Kansas, Butler, and Louisville.

That should give them a pretty good idea where they stand come conference play.

The BIG tournament is in DC. That is SO wrong.

  5. The Big Ten Tournament in Washington DC is like saying The Statue of Liberty is in Detroit. Weird.
