IU men’s, women’s soccer earn weekly honors

The Indiana men’s and women’s soccer teams each earned weekly honors from the Big Ten on Tuesday.

For the men, Indiana senior midfielder Tanner Thompson was named Offensive Player of the Week after scoring two goals, both game-winners, and recording an assist in a pair of victories for the then-No. 15 Hoosiers over New Mexico and Cal-Irvine at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend. Thompson was also named TopDrawerSoccer.com’s National Player of the Week for his efforts.

The two victories also pushed the Indiana men to No. 5 in the NSCAA poll this week, and the Hoosiers will take on No. 22 California and No. 15 Stanford this weekend in the IU Classic.

On the women’s side, freshman goalkeeper Sarah L’Hommedeiu was named Big Ten Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week after recording a pair of shutouts in a 1-0 win at Butler and a 3-0 victory at home over Northern Colorado. She is the first women’s soccer player in nearly two years to earn two honors in one week.
