IUWBB: Hoosiers 2016-17 schedule released

Indiana women’s basketball released its entire 2016-17 schedule, and it once again features a beefed up non-conference slate.

The Hoosiers, coming off of their first NCAA tournament win in 33 years, will face three teams that also made March Madness in ’15-16. All three of those matchups — Auburn, Chattanooga and Florida — will come on the road.

Another highlight of the non-conference schedule will be IU’s rematch with Vanderbilt. In return for the Hoosiers’ participation in a Thanksgiving tournament in Nashville in ’15, the Commodores will come to Assembly Hall on Sunday, Nov. 13. Vanderbilt will be led by Stephanie White, the soon-to-be former coach of the WNBA’s Indiana Fever.

The conference schedule isn’t overly daunting, by Big Ten standards. They play only once against four teams that finished in the conference’s top six, Ohio State, Purdue, Minnesota and Maryland, and those games come at home. Their one matchup with Michigan State, which finished third in 2015-16, comes on the road.

IU will get Penn State, Michigan and Northwestern twice. Those were three of the bottom four teams in the Big Ten last season.

IU will open its season with an exhibition against UIndy on Nov. 6. Hoosiers coach Teri Moren coached at UIndy for seven seasons from 2000-07 before her four years leading Indiana State.

Along with tournament teams Auburn, Chattanooga and Florida, IU will face WNIT participant Western Kentucky on the road Nov. 19. The Hoosiers will also travel to North Texas and North Carolina State, the latter as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The trip to North Texas is significant because it allows freshmen Ria Gulley and Bre Wickware, along with sophomore Danielle Williams, a chance to return to their home state.

IU’s non-conference home slate includes Presbyterian, Vanderbilt, UMass-Lowell, Northern Kentucky, Valparaiso and Oakland. The non-conference schedule will conclude at the Florida Sunshine Classic, the Hoosiers’ second trip to that event. This year, they will face Florida on Dec. 20 and Stony Brook on Dec. 21.

“We’re looking forward to our non-conference schedule once again,” Moren said in a statement. “We feel there is a good balance in and away from Assembly Hall. The strength of the non-conference schedule will prepare us for the always difficult Big Ten schedule. The month of February will be an incredible challenge for our team, but one we’ll embrace and look forward to.”
