IUWBB: Hoosiers debut just outside top 25 in USA Today Coaches Poll

Indiana debuted just outside the top 25 in the preseason USA Today Coaches poll released Thursday, receiving the second-most votes of unranked teams.

The Hoosiers, coming off the program’s first NCAA tournament win in 33 years, received 51 votes to be ranked in the top 25. South Florida received 65.

IU will get a chance to play some of the teams currently sitting in the lower rung of the top 25. Florida, currently at No. 24, will face off with the Hoosiers during the Florida Sunshine Classic in December. Michigan State came in at No. 22 in the preseason poll.

Only two other Big Ten teams, No. 5 Maryland and No. 6 Ohio State, were ranked in the top 25.

There are high expectations for the Hoosiers this season after a 21-12 campaign a year ago. Only two reserves from the 2015-16 squad, Lyndsay Leikem and Jess Walter, have left the program. IU has also added graduate transfer Amber Deane, a 1,000-point scorer at Dayton.

Juniors Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill were All-Big Ten players last year, and Buss was named to the preseason All-Big Ten team earlier this week. A media panel and the conference’s coaches picked IU to finish third in the Big Ten in ’16-17.

  1. I am very excited to be a fan of the Lady Hoosiers Basketball Team for 2016-17. What a terrific turn-around for Coach Moren and her team!

  2. This is obviously not a great surprise to those of us who have religiously followed this team over the years. This team has quietly evolved into what we now see over the 3 years that Teri Moren has been on board. Coach Moren and her staff have molded this team into the “defense first” approach that as we all know breeds success. The players have bought into her philosophy and have applied it to win after win last year. They were very competitive in the game against Notre Dame in last year’s NCAA Tournament which proved that they are indeed for real. I can only hope that we get more fans in the seats this year to cheer on these terrific girls, they deserve it!!

  3. My late mother-in-law was a big fan, and long time season ticket holder, of Tennessee women’s basketball. During the Pat Summitt years they would schedule doubleheaders with the men’s team so they would have fans in the stands to see the men. It was never a problem with the women’s program.

  4. For those that havent seen it our lady hoosiers come in at #23 in the AP today just as Charlie Creme suggested it would. I will never doubt him again. Im sure there will be an article up later today on the new polls. Its quite nice to see us getting this kind of national respect now we have to go out and prove we deserve it, go hoosiers!
