Defensive progress recognized in All-Big Ten selections

Indiana’s defensive gains have earned six Hoosiers All-Big Ten honors.

Junior linebacker Tegray Scales and junior cornerback Rashard Fant each earned second-team All-Big Ten honors for their work in rebuilding a beleaguered IU defense. Meanwhile, senior defensive tackle Ralph Green III (coaches), junior linebacker Marcus Oliver (coaches and media), sophomore safety Jonathan Crawford (media) and freshman hybrid safety Marcelino Ball (coaches and media) all received honorable mention nods.

Scales and Fant picked up second-team honors from the media and third team honors from the coaches.

This is the first time in program history that six defensive players were recognized with all-conference praise. Scales, who leads the nation with 87 solo tackles, is the first linebacker honored since Kyle Killion picked up second-team honors in 2004. Fant is the first IU cornerback to be recognized since Tracy Porter earned first-team honors in 2007. Fant leads the conference and ranks second nationally with 17 pass breakups.

Green leads the IU defensive line with 7.5 tackles for loss. Oliver is first in the Big Ten with five forced fumbles. Crawford shares the Big Ten lead with three fumble recoveries, and is tied for 11th in the conference with three interceptions. Ball leads all Big Ten true freshmen with 73 total tackles.

The Big Ten will announce offensive award winners on Wednesday’s episode of BTN Live at 5 p.m. Eastern.

  1. This is just the start of IU’s defensive players being recognized. In the future years we will have a defense that is as good as past offense was. I hope next year’s offense gets back up to the level in scoring that it has been up to this year. Having an offense that has a defense as good will take IU from playing close to the big teams to being able to beat a couple of those teams each year.

Scales and Fant deserve the honor along with the guys that the league gave honorable mention to. Now I hope everyone that can come back next year stays at IU and makes the defense the kind of defense they can build. The defense has a chance to bring back everyone but a couple of seniors but we have to see if anyone is going out early. IU needs players to come back to go with the returning offense guys that will make the team a veteran team instead of one needing freshman to step up.

  2. Also 3 Hoosiers on offense chosen B1G 10 Frosh says something about the good hands the offense is in, congrats to D. Williams, “Bacon” Natee and Coy Cronk.

  3. HC, yes IU has good players in the freshman class. I also wanted to say I don’t understand, except he plays at IU, why Scales didn’t make first team defense since he lead the nation and B1G with 87 solos and 20.5 TFL.

  4. Also why the hell did not Allen make the final cut for the Broyles award. That’s the biggest bunch of BS IU has had to withstand for some time.

  5. HC I agree, with the change he made in our defense with the biggest yardage and one of top scoring changes.
