IUWBB: IU beats UMass Lowell, Gassion reaches 1,000 points

Alexis Gassion needed 18 points to reach 1,000 for her career at Indiana.

The senior guard got exactly that, reaching the mark late in the fourth quarter of IU’s 79-45 win over UMass Lowell. Junior Tyra Buss, who was honored before the game for becoming the fastest to reach the 1,000-point mark, finished with 14. Amanda Cahill had 15 points.

The River Hawks (0-5) offered little resistance to the Hoosiers, who were looking to recover to following a road loss to Western Kentucky on Saturday. UMass Lowell turned the ball over 32 times, and IU was able to score 38 points off of turnovers, including 22 fast-break points.

IU (4-1) shot 47.8 percent from the field, but only 11-of-23 from the free throw line.

  1. IU bounced back from their last game at Western Kentucky with an easy win over a UMass Lowell team that frankly is not very good. The most important thing coming from this game is Alexis Gassion scoring her 1.000 career point. She needed 18 coming into the game and that is what she got late in the 4th quarter. She also had 5 rebounds and 6 assists to round out her performance. There were many really good performances. Tyra Buss had 14 points, 5 rebounds 4 assists and a career high 8 steals. Amanda Cahill had her usual 15 points to go along with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Jenn Anderson continued her strong play off the bench with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 big blocks. Darby Foresman had 6 points on 3 of 3 from the field and Bre Wickware was 2 for 2 from the field and also collected 3 steals in only 6 minutes of play. IU assisted on 21 of their 33 baskets and forced 34 turnovers.
We now travel to Auburn for a very tough game against a very good SEC team. Go Hoosiers!!

  2. t, I agree with you about Foresman. I really believe if Moren can somehow slip her into a very crowded rotation that she would really be able to contribute to this team. She is a highly skilled “big” who can do a variety of things. Watching her run the floor and score 3 different ways was good to see. Having 4 “bigs”; Anderson, Cahill, Royster and Darby gives us terrific depth up front. Go Hoosiers!!

  3. A big congrats to Lex for getting 1000 pts. I also agree that getting Darby into the regular rotation will be beneficial to the team. BTW I had her for 7 pts as her first shot was a 3 ptr. I have had the experience of watching her first hand at the high school level and she can run the floor and shoot with the best of them. Right now she is trying to feel her way along with her new teammates but in time everyone will see her value. I would like to see her become more aggressive on the inside ripping down some reb. as I know she can do.

  4. I have loved Alexis as a player since arrival of T. Moren and Alexis has stayed the course and done herself and team well. Congratulations to her. Plus she is getting a good education. Darby has tremendous upside and hopefully can make improvement even this year to be a solid effective contributor. She seems to be just one of those kids that will do well and has the coach to bring it out of her.

  5. I was wrong concerning Darby’s pt output as I went back and rewatched the game. The announcers had called it a 3 but it was a two so 6 pts as Mike related on the first post. I was happy to see Darby have minutes early in the game rather than at garbage time and that she was able to score as she did even though it was against Umass. lowell. Perhaps that will give Moren the confidence to use her more often against better teams.
