IUWBB: Hoosiers win double OT thriller over Iowa, 80-77

Indiana claimed a double-overtime win over Iowa, 80-77, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Wednesday.

Junior Amanda Cahill made it all possible, hitting a 3 with .2 seconds left to tie it up 64-all at the end of regulation. She was then the one who stymied Iowa’s Alexa Kastanek on the Hawkeyes final possession, forcing an airball 3 with time expiring.

Tyra Buss led the Hoosiers with 21 points, but fouled out with 2:22 left in the second overtime. She scored a layup only seconds earlier to put the Hoosiers up 78-74. Senior Alexis Gassion took over the paint, and she scored on a layup to make it 80-75 with 2:10 left.

Kathleen Doyle scored with 55 seconds left to pull the Hawkeyes to within three, but Iowa couldn’t get a shot off to tie it at the end of regulation.

Ally Disterhoft led the Hawkeyes (16-12, 7-8) with 23 points

  1. What a remarkable game tonight in the Hall!! The ladies clawed and scraped and fought their way to an improbable win on Senior Night. Iowa held an edge in shooting percentage (50%-41.4%)) and rebounding 36-25 but were unable to secure the victory from our girls. This game of course went 2 overtimes and although Iowa shot 50% in regulation, we held them to 3 for 12 from the field in the 2 overtime periods. One of the big edges for us was causing Iowa to turn the ball over 22 times leading to 15 IU points. We were never able to get into an offensive rhythm due to Iowa’s zone in the first half but, in the second half we made some adjustments that enabled us to score inside.
Our crowd tonight was decent (2,976) but was really loud in the 4th quarter and the 2 overtimes. At times this was not a pretty game to watch but, it was as exciting of a game that you will ever see! There were all kinds of big shots hit like Cahill’s 3 with around 3 seconds to go in regulation when we trailed by 3. And then Karlee McBride hit a huge 3 in the first overtime to tie it up for IU when things were looking bleak.
As stated in the above article, all 5 starters scored in double figures led by Buss’s 21 points (5 for 9 from 3). Jenn Anderson had 20 points and 6 rebounds. Amanda Cahill had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in a great all around game. Alexis Gassion had 10 points, 7 rebounds, 9 huge assists and 4 steals. Karlee McBride scored 12 points all from 3 point land.
This team gutted out this game and rewarded the senior’s with a night they will never forget! On to Illinois!!

  2. Steve C said “At times this was not a pretty game to watch but, it was as exciting of a game that you will ever see!”

That is probably an understatement. I have NEVER seen a more exciting basketball game. Both teams had several chances to put each other away, and both teams refused to accept the notion that the game was over.

Outstanding win for the Hoosiers, and my gut tells me if we don’t have another stinker at Illinois, IU will be in the NCAA for the second year in a row.

  3. This was a truly hard fought and remarkable win for the IU ladies. It literally wore me out as their was just too much importance riding on the game both positioning for the Big ten and ncaa bid potential. One scary moment in my mind was when Cahill hit the 3 to send the game into OT, 3 or 4 IU players came onto the floor to celebrate and mob Amanda but there was still time on the clock. Mcbride alertly was trying to get those players off the court even before the official came on the scene. They would have been in their rights to call a tech at that point, game over. The official went straight over to Moren explaining the situation, we were lucky twice in that instance. Too bad Penn State couldnt knock off Mich St for us as they did have them down by 19 at one point. The spartans finish at Neb. and we finish at Ill.

  4. Congrats to Lex and Jenn on great careers at I.U. Your parents are proud of you I am sure . Glad you could go out with a win . Lex is valuable beyond words and Jenn has come on to have a great senior year . Shout out to Tom and Chrissy you should be proud .

  5. Happy Senior Night! T.Moren has patiently stayed with K.M. and for the last 3 games she has come through for the ladies.

  6. One thing I did forget when I put on my post. Jenn Anderson’s HUGE block on Ally Disterhoft’s drive to the basket at the end of the first overtime when the score was tied. It was monumental!!!!

  7. There were many big moments by different players. Lets just hope they can come down of the high of the emotional win to play well enough to take care of ILL. and not pull the boner like after the last big game.

  8. Amanda hitting that 3 with less than a second on the clock was the best moment since Jazz hit her shot at the buzzer to beat Purdue in 2013. Nice job by the crowd for their intensity and volume.
A WNIT invite is a lock. A win at Illinois is a must for a NCAA bid. I believe 21 wins is the magic number for a lock so we need at least 1 win in the conference tournament in addition to the Illinois win. Go Hoosiers!
