Fant named to Jim Thorpe Award watch list

The preseason honors keep coming for Rashard Fant.

The Indiana senior cornerback was named to the watch list for the 2017 Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the nation’s best defensive back. Fant is one of five Big Ten defensive backs included on the list.

It’s the third preseason recognition that Fant has earned this week. The Georgia native is a member of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, and is also in consideration for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Fant is the NCAA’s active career leader and Indiana’s all-time leader with 48 passes defended and 44 pass breakups in 38 games. A second team All-Big Ten selection in 2016, Fant led the Big Ten in pass breakups (17) and passes defended (20) last fall.

Fant also shared the team lead with three interceptions, including a 34-yard pick returned for a touchdown in the season opener at Florida International.

The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compiles a list of 30 to 50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the year progresses. A winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 7.

  1. I hope this award is a sign that Fant is going to improve even more this season. He has gotten better every year and IU needs him to have a huge season to have the team breakthrough this year. It also gives coaches a way to show recruits that coming to IU they are noticed and can make the list themselves.

  2. Fant is already one of the top corners in the B1G. If he improves again, that would be great. A true lockdown corner would be awesome. It’s the other side and the safeties that really need to improve the most. Linebackers may be solid with Scales as their anchor. The line worries me the most. Another year with Allen at the helm will hopefully prove that last year wasn’t a fluke defensively. I don’t believe it was but also know that another leap mat not be possible. We’ll see with our first contest…

We want the candy stripes uniforms for that first game against that team that spells so well they deserve a cookie each time they spell out their own name!

    Go Hoosiers!!
