Hoosiers pick up commitment from 3-star DE James Head

Indiana bolstered its pass rush on Friday evening, getting a commitment from three-star Florida defensive end James Head.

A 6-foot-5, 213-pound native of Miami, Head chose Indiana from an impressive list of suitors. His seven finalists included IU, Michigan State, Oregon, Tennessee, Baylor, South Carolina and Mississippi State.

According to the 247 Sports Composite rankings, Head is the No. 25 strong-side defensive end in the country and the No. 98 overall prospect from his home state.

As a junior last season, Head made 85 tackles and 19 sacks. The Miami Herald named him to its All-Dade County second team.

“I want to thank my parents for being with me every step throughout my recruitment,” Head wrote in a message posted to his Twitter account. “And to all my teammates and coaches … I want to thank them for pushing me and making me the hard worker I am now. I would also like to give thanks to every university that gave me a shot to be apart of their team. But I believe in Coach (Tom) Allen’s and Coach (Mark) Hagen’s vision on the future. With that being said I am committing to Indiana University.”

Head’s verbal pledge is a significant win for Hagen and the Hoosiers. It may also lead Head’s Miami Southridge High School teammate Randy Charlton, a three-star defensive end and fellow IU target, to choose Indiana, also. Head and Charlton visited Bloomington together recently before reportedly canceling a trip to Michigan State.

Head is the 11th member of IU’s 2018 recruiting class and the second defensive end, joining three-star Illinois prospect Gavin McCabe. Head’s commitment follows a verbal pledge given earlier Friday by three-star Washington D.C. offensive tackle Aidan Rafferty.

  1. Wow, if it holds through LOI signing day, IU will have beaten out a lot of really high quality football schools to get this guy. That could be a huge coup! Makes me wonder why this young man is not rated as a 4-star player?

  2. Head’s rating has him just a tenth below being a 4 star and as the season goes along I expect he will rise in the rankings. Charlton was saying he wanted to come to IU but hasn’t commited yet the way Head did. There is a good chance Charlton will commit to IU and IU is in a good position to bring in Norris from Hamilton Southeastern but there is a lot of competion for him.
IU has made a big push for edge rushers that have been missing from this defense. I hope they pull in the other two DE that they want this cycle.

  3. Current class starting to look a little better. The pass two recruits look very good on paper and in Hudl. With that said IU still needs a QB in this recruiting class.

  4. I’ve long seen that even in the best case, with the jarring removal of KW and replacement of TA, that even AT BEST, it would take this staff a while to gain some momentum. All the “sky is falling, we’re ranked at the bottom of the B1G” feelings aren’t of concern unless it is finalized on signing day. Momentum looks good.
