Scales, Fant named to Nagurski Trophy watch list

Indiana’s Tegray Scales and Rashard Fant are in fine company entering the 2017 season.

Scales, a senior linebacker, and Fant, a fifth-year senior cornerback, have been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list, the Football Writers Association of America announced Thursday.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded annually to the best defensive player in college football.

Scales earned second team All-America honors from last season after leading the country with 93 solo stops and 23.5 tackles for loss. Entering his final season in Bloomington, Scales has also been named to the Chuck Bednarik Award and Lott IMPACT Trophy watch lists.

Fant is the NCAA’s active career leader and IU’s all-time leader with 48 passes defended and 44 pass breakups in 38 games. Last season, Fant led the Big Ten in pass breakups (17) and passes defended (20).

The Atlantic Coast Conference led all leagues with 20 players on the Nagurski watch list, followed by the Big Ten (16), SEC (14), Pac-12 (13), Big 12 (11), American Athletic (10), Sun Belt (6), Mountain West (5), Independents (3), Mid-American (3) and Conference USA (2). The list includes 30 defensive backs, 29 linebackers, 25 defensive ends and 19 defensive tackles.

Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the season. As in previous years, the FWAA will announce a National Defensive Player of the Week each Tuesday throughout the season. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Thurs., Nov. 16.

  1. Good advertisement for IU to incoming recruits. I hope both players have the kind of season that gain them multiple awards.
