Williams named to Hornung Award watch list

During his first two years at Indiana, Devonte Williams has played offense, defense and special teams for the Hoosiers.

That kind of versatility is now being recognized.

On Monday, Williams was placed on the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football.

Williams, a redshirt sophomore running back and return specialist, enters the 2017 season at No. 10 on Indiana’s all-time kick return yardage list with 988 yards. A member of the 2016 BTN.com All-Freshman team, Williams rushed for 147 yards on 48 carries and caught seven passes for 50 yards in 11 games last season. He also returned 39 kicks for 784 yards.

Williams finished second on the team with 1,001 all-purpose yards and recorded five 100-plus all-purpose yardage games on the year.

Williams is one of only five Big Ten players named to the list and one of three sophomores overall.

  1. A great list for Williams to be recognized by. I hope this year the focus on special teams will include more break away kick off returns. We haven’t seen KO return go for a TD for a while and it could really fire up a team when it happens. I hope Williams has a great 2017 season.
