IU soccer ranked 7th preseason

The first coaches’ poll of the 2017 season is out, and the Indiana men’s soccer team slots in at No. 7.

The Hoosiers, who were ninth in the final poll last season, are one of three Big Ten teams to be ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll (formerly the National Soccer Coaches Association of America). Maryland is ranked sixth and Michigan State 22nd.

Other ranked opponents on the IU schedule this season are No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 25 Butler. The Hoosiers will also play No. 9 Louisville in a preseason match at Grand Park in Westfield.

Indiana returns six starters from last year’s team, which earned an NCAA Tournament berth for the 30th-straight season, making the program’s 36th appearance in the NCAA Tournament round of 16.

Joining the group of returners in 2017 for the Hoosiers will be a 10-member recruiting class that was ranked No. 4 in the nation by both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News.

Indiana opens the regular season on Aug. 25 at the Mike Berticelli Memorial in South Bend, while the opener comes on Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. against San Francisco.
