Position battles to continue in Saturday scrimmage

Indiana will hold its second closed scrimmage of the month on Saturday, and a few key position battles will have the attention of coach Tom Allen and his staff.

Allen told reporters Friday that he has enjoyed watching Tony Fields and Chase Dutra fight for the starting free safety job throughout fall camp. Fields started all 13 games alongside Jonathan Crawford last season, finishing fifth on the team with 70 tackles.

Dutra also saw plenty of time, appearing in 10 games and making 46 stops. Entering his final season of eligibility, Dutra has authored a strong camp, according to Allen.

“Chase Dutra and Tony Fields have really gone back and forth for that spot,” Allen said. “Kind of had different ones put with the (first team defense) and rotate them back and forth. It’s good leverage to be able to know that you’ve got opportunities.”

The same goes at corner, where redshirt sophomore Andre Brown and true freshmen LaDamion Hunt and Raheem Layne have pushed A’Shon Riggins for the second starting corner assignment.

“Those four guys are vying for that other corner position,” Allen said. “Haven’t had that kind of depth in the past — definitely (not) since I’ve been here. I was talking to Coach (Brandon) Shelby and he hasn’t had that either.”

Offensively, running back is the spot to watch, with at least a handful of players in the mix for featured reps. On the outside, IU coaches are still looking to see who will climb the depth chart and join Simmie Cobbs and Nick Westbrook among the team’s top receivers.

Junior Donavan Hale has been coming on strong, showing greater consistency as a passing target.

“That whole receiver corps is trying to jockey through positions,” Allen said.

  1. IU is in a much better position this year as they have a number of players that can compete for a position. In the past so often, we worried if a starter got injured how bad the team would be hurt. Now IUFB has quality players to step in and replace a starter will little drop off in playing ability.

It will be interesting to see how the RB spots shakes out. I hope the spot gets worked out soon as the season is approaching soon.
