Buss, Cahill named to preseason All-Big Ten team

Indiana’s Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill were voted preseason All-Big Ten by both the media and its coaches, the conference announced Monday.

Buss, the Hoosiers’ point guard, was a preseason all-conference selection last year, and this is Cahill’s first preseason honor.  The coaches unanimously elected Buss to the squad, making her one of four players to receive that distinction.

Buss and Cahill will shoulder a heavy burden this season. IU returns four players, including junior post Kym Royster and sophomore wing Bre Wickware. The roster is filled out by five freshmen.

Buss averaged 18.4 points, 4.7 assists and 2.4 steals per game in 2016-17. She was the first player in program history to score 600 or more points in back-to-back seasons and the fastest player in school history to reach 1,000 career points.

Buss currently has 1,601 points, which ranks eighth all-time in program history, just behind Jamie Braun (1,603). The program record is held by Denise Jackson (1,917).

Cahill, a 6-foot-2 forward, has a chance to be one of the best rebounders/scorers in program history. She has 820 boards heading into her senior season and could join Jackson (1,273) and Whitney Thomas (1,090) in the 1,000-rebound club. At 1,302 points, Cahill can become the only Hoosier to ever finish in the program’s top 8 for points, rebounds and 3-pointers.

Along with preseason all-conference teams, the media and coaches also voted on the Big Ten’s top squads, and both voting panels agreed on a top 3: Ohio State, Maryland and Michigan.

IU was picked third in last season’s preseason poll; the Hoosiers went on to finish fourth.

  1. Buss and Cahill are living the college lady athlete’s dream along with several of the returning and newly added IU ladies. Life is good.

  2. This certainly doesn’t come as a surprise to IU fans who have watched this team play. These two girls will wind up as possibly the all-time leading scorer and leading rebounder in IU history. Their combined contributions to Indiana women’s basketball have been invaluable over their years in Bloomington. I have watched IU women’s basketball for over 25 years mostly as a season ticket holder and Amanda is my all-time favorite player! Her and Tyra have changed the culture of IU women’s basketball and along with coach Moren have the future looking bright! Go Hoosiers!!
