Cobbs receives 1st Team All-Big Ten honors

Simmie Cobbs made another big catch on Wednesday.

The Indiana redshirt junior receiver brought home first team All-Big Ten honors from the league’s coaches and media, the conference announced.

In doing so, Cobbs becomes the first Indiana receiver named to the first team since Tandon Doss (2009-10) and joins senior linebacker Tegray Scales and senior kicker Griffin Oakes as All-Big Ten first team honorees.

Cobbs finished second in the conference with 72 receptions this season, tying for fourth on IU’s single-season leaderboard. He was third in yardage (841) and tied for fourth in receiving touchdowns (eight).

Three of Cobbs’ seven career 100-yard games came this season. He was the only Big Ten receiver and one of eight nationally with three 10-plus catch performances.

Now, Cobbs will weigh whether to return to IU for his final year of eligibility or declare for the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Illinois native headlined a list of four Hoosier offensive players honored by the Big Ten’s coaches and media. Senior tight end Ian Thomas, redshirt junior left guard Wes Martin and redshirt junior receiver Luke Timian each picked up honorable mention recognition.

Those honors give Indiana a program-record 13 players who were honored by the conference. The previous record of 12 was set in 2015 and matched in 2016.

  1. Congratulations Mr. Cobbs and all the best to you as you move on to play at the next level. This recognition can only improve your draft stock, and I’m sure you will enter the NFL draft this spring. My guess is that you will get drafted in either the third or fourth round. I hope you have a long and prosperous career and get to retire in good health.

  2. Congratulations to Simmie Cobbs. I will wait to see what he decides for next year. If he goes Pro I hope he sticks with a team and has a good career.
