Lillard named MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist #iums

Indiana University senior captain Grant Lillard was named as one of 15 semifinalists for the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy on Tuesday, United Soccer Coaches announced.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. The semifinalists were determined based on voting by NCAA Division I soccer coaches, and other semifinalists include Notre Dame’s Jon Gallagher, Louisville’s Tim Kubel and Carmel native Cameron Lindley of North Carolina.

IU men’s soccer has had 11 national players of the year, with the last being Danny O’Rourke in 2004. Lillard’s coaches at IU, head coach Todd Yeagley and associated head coach Brian Maisonneuve split the MAC Player of the Year and Hermann Trophy in 1994, before the two awards merged in 2002.

The Hoosier coaching staff was also honored Tuesday, named the Midwest Region Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches.

Three men’s finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy will be named on Dec. 8 in conjunction with the NCAA College Cup semifinals in Philadelphia, and the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 5, 2018, to formally announce the winners.

Lillard has been the backbone of a record-breaking defensive season for the Hoosiers, earning first team All-Big Ten and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors. Starting all 22 matches at center back, Lillard has keyed an IU defense that leads the nation with 17 shutouts and five goals allowed.

Offensively, Lillard has totaled two goals and two assists, scoring the game-winners against Santa Clara and Old Dominion in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Hinsdale, Ill., product has also been a standout in the classroom, earning 2016 second team Scholar All-America honors, as well as first team Scholar All-Region and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
