Oakes named Big Ten’s Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year

Griffin Oakes’ bounce-back season has come full circle.

The Big Ten on Thursday named Oakes the 2017 Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year, awarding a campaign that saw the fifth-year senior return to operating as one of the nation’s most reliable specialists.

Oakes made 16 of his 17 field goals on the year, including 11 straight to close the season. He was also 38-for-39 on extra points. Both of his misses came on blocks.

The Greenwood native, who also won the Big Ten’s 2015 Bakken-Andersen award, returned to form after a disappointing 2016 campaign, during which he missed 10 field goals.

Oakes responded by becoming IU’s all-time leader with 69 field goals, closing his career second on IU’s leaderboard with 354 total points. He was 15-for-15 from inside the 50-yard line and made each of his four attempts from within 40 to 49 yards.

Oakes was also one of only eight kickers with at least one 50-yard field goal and a 85 percent-or-better accuracy.
