IUWBB: Buss claims IU scoring record in loss at Penn State

On a transition layup with 8:50 left in the third quarter, senior Tyra Buss became the all-time leading scorer in Indiana women’s basketball history.

But, in the end, the Hoosiers couldn’t get all the baskets they needed in a 77-74 loss at Penn State.

IU (7-9, 0-3 Big Ten) climbed back from a 15-point, fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game at 74-all on two Buss free throws with 22 seconds left. But a layup by Siyeh Frazier, an offensive foul call on Kym Royster and a free throw from Teniya Page gave the game back to the Lady Lions.

Buss. who finished with 27 points, came into Wednesday night with 1,904 career points, which was 13 short of Denise Jackson, who held the school’s scoring record from 1984 on. The Hoosiers’ 5-foot-8 guard reached 12 points Wednesday on a layup with 58 seconds left in the second half.

That left Buss with one more bucket to score. She missed her first shot of the second half, a 3-pointer, and nearly had an opportunity on a two-on-one with Royster, but threw the ball out of bounds trying to pass back to the junior forward.

But after two false starts, Buss surpassed Jackson’s mark on a transition lay-in. She will now have the rest of the season to build on her legacy.

Buss was the first player in program history to score 600 or more points in back-to-back seasons and the fastest player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. Buss now holds the career records for free throws attempted, free throws made and points. Career marks for steals and assists are also within reach.

As far as the Hoosiers are concerned, as a team, they are left with another defeat. It’s their fifth loss in their last six games and snaps a four-game winning streak in the series with the Lady Lions.

IU went into halftime trailing 42-36. The Hoosiers were able to even it up at 50-all with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lady Lions went on a 10-0 run to finish the period, capped by a 3-pointer from Amari Carter.

PSU (10-6, 1-2 B1G) continued its momentum into the fourth quarter, taking a 68-53 lead with 6:23 left in the game. But 3s from Buss and sophomore Bre Wickware cut the deficit to nine, and two free throws from Buss ended an 8-0 burst for the Hoosiers.

Another 3 from Buss, followed by an Amanda Cahill three-point play, made it 72-67 with 2:46 remaining. Two free throws from freshman Jaelynn Penn cut PSU’s lead to three.

Frazier hit a layup to push the advantage back to five, but a conventional 3-pointer from Cahill, who finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, put the Hoosiers behind 74-72 with 48 seconds left. Another pair of Buss free throws followed, but IU couldn’t find a go-ahead bucket.

  1. Einstien’s definition of insanity comes to mind. Next year will be a “rebuilding” year, year 5 of a 6 year contract. Something akin to the immaculate conception will have to happen to get an extension. Recruiting will be harder. Where are we headed?

  2. Ladies competed. Close on the road. Penn State talent level is at level that IU ladies could legitimately compete with.

  3. Thank God for teams like Illinois and wisconsin or we may legitimately lose every conference game

    1. It sounded like IU would win a rematch at home with PN St. The road games are always tough in the B1G.

  4. hoosier”fan”041931, I would hate to live in a world where joy is found by badmouthing coaches and young college players who are doing their best.
I personally am proud of Tyra and our team.
Down by 15 (68 to 53) with 6:53 left in the game, on the road at a hostile environment known for bad calls, IU put forth an Incredible effort (with a fouled out starter) and tied the game at 72-72 with 42 seconds left.
I see good things ahead for the lady Hoosiers.
This year will be tough, but I remember when every year seemed to be like this one.

  5. The defensive side of the ball failed us miserably in this game. As I watched this game, it became readily apparent that our freshmen are really struggling defensively. Throughout the game our freshmen were constantly beat off the dribble and either allowed their player to score or put them on the free throw line. Penn St. scored 21 points off of our turnovers. The difference in the game was our turn overs and our poor defense which did stiffen up during the 4th quarter. It was great to see our girls fight back in the 4th quarter to put themselves in a situation to tie the game at the end. I thought that Marchese and Wickware played very well in their limited minutes. Buss and Cahill had terrific all around games. BTW, Buss is getting all kinds of accolades about breaking the scoring record but, I thought her holding Penn St’s best player (Teniya Page) to 10 points on only 8 field goal attempts. One other thing about the game, the officiating was the worst I have seen this year! I normally don’t complain about the referees but, last night they were very inconsistent. NatHill, u are correct about Hoosierfan, he has nothing to say except for doom & gloom! It will be nice to get back home Saturday against Purdue. It would be nice to see another 4,000 in the stands again! Go Hoosiers!!

  6. Congrats to Buss on the record , but yes her defense on Page was a big plus. The officiating was terrible , surprised Moren kept it together. IU made a great run at the end to try and win but Penn’s errant passing continues defeating their purpose. Maybe it is time for a shake up in the lineup. As for a nice crowd like last home game, Im thinking the reason was the fans from bedford to see Jenna Allen as someone else mentioned.

  7. Since we are underperforming (Like almost every year) we just focus on individual accomplishments and act like basketball is somehow based around one player breaking records and has nothing to do with W/L. Let’s hope she focuses on the passing record next since as our pg she has 3 assists and 11 TO in conference play thus far

  8. Tyra Buss is so much more than a scorer. She is an example with heart that has elevated the IU ladies program image from where it was to where it is and it is elevated. Great on and off court college student athlete, attitude, effort, and hustle both, offensively and defensively always willing to adjust to whatever circumstances she is in for the team. Tyra is an excellent leader. She would be an excellent coach or whatever she chooses to do. For those who understand she is what the IU ladies basketball program image needs and yes, Tyra can play defense.

    1. I don’t think I said she couldn’t play defense..i said she needs to get her teammates involved in *offense* more now that she doesn’t have that *huge burden* of trying to break the scoring record now. And I watched her against elite competition at the u23 trials…

  9. Inaccurate statement. T.B. has many assists and definitely makes every effort to get teammates involved. Ladies need to understand who the scorers are. Though T.B. misses some she is the scorer along with A.C., and J.P., and along with K.R. IU ladies are losing possessions due to some players are taking shots and not coming close to making baskets. They just don’t have a good touch. Those players need to be looking to pass and be very shot selective. They need to work extremely hard to set up the scorers and get the scorers involved so that the ladies can be more scoring efficient on offense. That way IU ladies have a chance to win against the mid to lower big ten teams and maybe get a win against one of the higher level big ten teams. Then, of course there is the defense. I am still thinking 1 game above 500.

  10. However, realistically based on current performance and schedule IU ladies may be looking for 11 or 12 wins.

  11. You would hate to see Buss and Cahill’s senior year be wasted . If they dont turn this around soon we will be looking at the B1G tourney as a last gasp effort to make a post season bid.

  12. Hoosierfan, so now we are “underperforming” during the Buss & Moren area with records over the last 3 years of; 2015 (20-11, 11-7) in conference, 2016 (20-10, 12-6) in conference, and 2017 (23-11, 10-6) in conference. They have also finished as the # 4 seed in the conference tournament 2 of those years. I would believe that the 63 wins over a 3 year period may be the most wins in a 3 year span at IU. OMG Hoosierfan, how you go on? Yes, they are struggling this year with a bunch of freshmen who are really struggling to gain experience. To say they have underperformed over the Moren & Buss area is a bit much when you look at what this team has done over the last 3 years. T, very well stated in your post. Our freshmen are struggling big time and last night’s game was a real problem for them, Penn and Yeaney really struggle defensively. We just have to be patient.

    1. Why are we struggling with a bunch of freshman? Because we didnt recruit any big ten post players or point guards so cahill and buss could play their actual positions! Take the blinders off and realize why we are in this position and how its going to get worse

  13. Let’s be patient while we await the programs best two players graduate, we rebuild next year in morens 5th year on contract with no chance of an extension and we try to recruit kids to come and play with no assurance the coach will be around.

  14. Tyra Buss is the best IU woman basketball player of all time! Thank you Tyra! Amanda Cahill is not that far behind. Let’s all pull for these two remarkable Lady Hoosiers!

  15. Congratulations to Tyra Buss! Mike C. you are correct with your assessment of the defensive job Tyra did on Page. She also shut down Tayrn McCutchoen of Michigan State ( 1 point, 5 turnovers ) in the conference opener. She has worked hard to become a very good defensive player and the fact is that most players are not willing to put in the amount of work and effort it takes to improve as much as she has. More important than all of her points, assists, rebounds, and steals is that Tyra Buss is a true warrior and for that alone I’ll take her on my team seven days a week and twice on Sundays.

As for the game we had 18 turnovers.

  16. Poll:
Which Moren recruit do you think has had the most impact on the program’s success? Please reply to this comment before this thread is closed.

  17. 86, who wants to give you the time of day when all you do is cut down the program. Chill out a bit and find a hobby.

  18. You and Hoosier fan need to jump on that train and find another team. Do you really think all your bashing is helping the players and program?
Do you think Glass comes on here and says, oh yeah I should hire 86 and fan to run the IU athletic program. ( they are so smart ) Chill dude it will all be ok.
Buss , broke a huge record she is an elite player and always has been. Lets see if you can give any props out to her or , are you just a angry dude.

    1. I just state facts, apparently you don’t like facts. Look at the big picture. I’m interested in the program succeeding. Your inability to name a moren recruit that has been impactful speaks volumes. What has to happen next year for moren to get a contract extension?

  19. 86, my last response. Why do you and fan come on here to express your bashing ? Does no good , will not bring the change you want.
Bring your bashing to Glass or the Alumni assoc. With that we shouldn’t hear anymore bashing from you . I just gave you the road map for bashing .
Not being able to congat Buss on this huge achievement shows you are an angry dude. Hint of advice for life. So much easier to be cool in life then a basher. Dude your interest in the program is to bash it.
Want a true fact ? just laid it on you .

    1. I congratulated Tyra in person. I’m not bashing anyone. I’m just looking at the bigger picture and stating facts. If you see that as bashing, it’s because the facts aren’t pretty.

You all are looking at the now, which is fine. I’m looking forward, which is what you have to do to build a program. Take you emotions out of it and tell me I’m wrong about the facts.

  20. T.B. stayed with T.Moren and Hoosier program upon T.Moren arrival. It doesn’t get much better and any better regarding tradition and history of IU ladies basketball program.

  21. As far as I’m concerned, if you bad mouth a an ambassador of Hoosier basketball such as Tyra you are no Hoosier fan.

Usually, when people do things like that there is a personal grudge involved.

    1. how have I bad mouthed anyone? I haven’t done anything but state facts. Which facts that i’ve stated are false?

  22. How many of you had thought about where we are in moren’s contract? There won’t be an extension this year and if not next year then the writing’s on the wall. So what has to happen next year to get an extension so she can recruit with some assurance? What’s the milestones that need to be reached?
So you look back at past performance, what success has this staff had at recruiting 3 years in?

I’m sorry if you think this is bashing but this is how an administrator has to look at things to insure program success. A simple question, what recruit (name just one) has this staff brought to the program that has made an impact? Yes, next year’s class is promising but they’ll be mostly freshman and it’s year 5 of 6. That’s an important consideration.

  23. Fan, I’m intrigued by your lineup suggestion.
All I know is that we were getting killed at Penn State and with Wickare in at the end of the game, we somehow scored 21 points (while allowing 6) in less than seven minutes.
Enthusiasm and fresh legs go a long way it would appear.

      1. The most successful three season run in Hoosier history. Their first NCAA tournament victory in 33 years. Coach Moren winning Big Ten coach of the year.

        How’s that for a start?.

        1. …as stated before, them facts are pesky…and I would add damned inconvenient when they destroy your argument…

  24. all of this using Coach Miller’s recruits. which is my point that you are making for me. What has this staff itself done to bring in recruits of it’s own to continue this upward projectory? Nothing. None of you can name one recruit this staff has brought to the program in 3 years that has had any impact. If getting Big Ten coach of the year earns you an extension she would have gotten it already. You need to me more objective.

    1. They want to ignore glaring facts and drink the purple koolaid..im inclined to let them. I said we had underperformed in moren years, they read it as “didn’t perform” I say we haven’t played to our potential, every season we dropped silly games we should have won, every season moren has played a 5 or 6 man rotation as if she had nobody to substitute, yet somehow we have players that left iu and are averaging like 20 ppg and one is starting on a better team with higher rpi… but back to the here and now. This year is proving that this staff can’t consistently win even with IU greats Cahill and buss..i shudder to think about next year. Moren will have to pull what holly warlick and c. Vivian stringer did this year and turn it around quickly. Warlick had the #1 recruiting class in the country to make her job easier though.

Regardless, I don’t think moren will get an extension based on the internal investigations that have already happened regarding player treatment, ect but there’s a sliver of hope for you guys.

  25. Man, you’re just kinda pitiful.

Coach Moren was very successful from the start using the players available and you try to paint that as a bad thing.

    Pitiful.

    1. Chet, answer this: The recruiting talent over the last 3 years has gotten better, the same, or worse?

that will give you a perspective of where this program is going. If you can’t see that then it’s because you refuse to.

      1. You don’t know what direction the recruiting is going. CTC had “The Movement”. Supposed to be his best recruiting class. It was his worst.

Stars on a recruiting list are just a guess.

Lots of people insisted Tyra was going to be a bust because she was just a cute little girl who played at a small school. Her accomplishments in high school were downplayed.

Anunoby, Howard, and Oladipo were declared ‘wasted scholarships’.

What do we know for a fact? The Hoosiers have had their best three year run in the program’s history and they won their first NCAA tournament gme in 33 years.

        Those are facts.

No one ever touts the success of Wooden, Knight, Coach K, et al, in recruiting players with lots of stars. They point to their won-lost record and how they did in the tournament. That’s all that matters.

        1. all done with miller’s players. that’s what i keep saying. what has THIS staff done to bring in players to keep that momentum going? What? No one has that answer.

          1. So laughable. What coach was responsible for the 1973 trip to the men’s Final Four?

Using your rationale it was Jerry Oliver. Coach Knight didn’t recruit those guys.

But we all know how stupid that would sound.

  26. Hoosierfan– You say there are on going internal investigations, what proof do you have of such. I can find no info concerning the present iuwbb program. Nothing written anywhere that I can find.

    1. No one with an ounce of integrity would make such a claim without presenting proof to back up their claim. In the absence of proof a responsible person must assume it is a false claim.

That assumption would be consistent with what we have read previously.

    2. I did not say anything about an ongoing internal investigations, I simply stated that there has been at least one investigation under moren concerning player treatment, ect…which is a fact.

They are not going to announce anything about the program that they do not want you to know. Do you know why coach miller is gone? I do. Don’t think the school ever made a release about that either but it DID happen.

  27. also, Tom Crean won Big Ten coach of the year, didn’t get an extension the next year and then got fired. He didn’t recruit the state of Indiana either. The precedent has been set by Fred.

  28. T.Moren and IU ladies program has set a precedent (though many repeaters) the number of blog posts. Upwards in this thread alone near 50, several of which are stupid and ridiculous. However, interest in IU ladies when a thread of posts is started matches or surpasses bb and fb. Yes, interest in IU ladies basketball program has been elevated under direction of T. Moren. This is just another reason T.Moren will win (this season is experiencing a hiccup) and continue to coach at IU with a contract extension.

    1. sounds good to me. let’s get 100 posts and the team will win more and our coach will get an extension even though we don’t have any top level recruits! lol.
I’d love for someone to prove I’m wrong but no one has provided any proof that any of the facts I’ve stated are wrong. you call it a hiccup but there’s no reason why we didn’t build on the momentum of the best team in program history and take it to the next level. We didn’t do that and now we are declining at a crucial point in the coach’s contract term. It’s that simple.

      1. 3 5 stars will be on the team next year along with other players that were better recruits than past years. Has a completely new team this year filled with freshman who are forced to play a lot of minutes. Have not had a game that wasn’t close just having a hard time finishing do to lack of experience.

        1. and why are we in this predicament? where are the juniors and sophs we should have recruited while we were riding high? That’s all I’m asking.

          1. The Duke men’s team has the same issue. Using your rationale that means Coach K is a poor coach.

You are another who has forgotten the first rules of holes.

      2. You are certainly entitled to your opinion. As far as facts go I haven’t seen any documented facts in your posts. Well here are some documented facts :
Coach Moren was hired on August 9, 2014 to replace Curt Miller who abruptly resigned. The early signing date for her first recruiting class was November 12, 2014. She had 94 days to assemble a staff and recruit players for that period. From that recruitment process was Kym Royster who is currently among the conference leaders in multiple catogories. From her first two full recruiting cycles we have six current players – Bre Wickware and our five freshmen. How any of these players impact this program during their time here remains to be seen. The fact is that that Coach Moren’s third full recruiting cycle class won’t even arrive until next season.
Another fact is that Tyra and Amanda were recruited by the previous coaching staff. That’s a fact. However they have only been coached by the current staff. That’s a fact. Whether they would have reached the same level of success under the previous staff is unknown. Maybe so , maybe not.
It is my belief that it takes four full recruiting cycles to lay the foundation for any program to establish long term stability and success. It took Geno four cycles at Connecticut .

  29. The fact is we’ve went from an ncaa tourney team to not even close.
Next year is a pivotal season in moren’s career here. It all remains to be seen. But dont say i didnt warn you.
    On to the next opponent

    1. We also went from a team that didn’t sniff the post season to winning a tourney game for the first time in 33 years under Moren.

I noticed you passed by my other post so I’ll include it here as goes directly to your entire argument.

What coach was responsible for the 1973 trip to the men’s Final Four?

Using your rationale it was Jerry Oliver. Coach Knight didn’t recruit those guys. Oliver did.

But we all know how stupid that would sound.
