IUWBB: Jaelynn Penn is B1G freshman of the week, again

Indiana’s Jaelynn Penn is doubling up on her freshman plaudits.

Penn, the 5-foot-10 guard, was named the Big Ten freshman of the week Monday for the second consecutive week. That makes her the first Hoosier to earn the award in back-to-back weeks since Tyra Buss in 2014-15.

The other IU freshman to earn two freshman of the week honors is Larryn Brooks in 2013-14, they just didn’t come in consecutive weeks.

Penn earned the award by averaging 11 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in two wins, along with a 46.2 shooting percentage from the field. She scored 14 points in a victory over Rutgers on Saturday, hitting all six of her free throws.

IU coach Teri Moren talked about Penn and fellow freshman Bendu Yeaney’s improved shot selection after the Rutgers win. Penn was 4-of-7 from the floor.

“These two kids, what I’m most proud of is that they are finally figuring out what a good shot is for them,” Moren said. “I thought both of them have really done an outstanding job of taking high-percentage shots for us and understanding we need them to score.”

  1. This is terrific for Jaelynn and IU. This shows the terrific job that coach Moren and the staff did in recruiting her to us. She has become that needed scorer that will make us successfull. Her all around game has been very important to our recent success. Go Hoosiers!!

  3. Being awarded freshmen of the week again with 11 points and 4.5 rebounds/game is proof how hard it is to play well in the BigTen as a freshmen.
