IUWBB: Hoosiers No. 7 seed in B1G tournament

Regular season play has come to a close, and now the field for the Big Ten women’s basketball tournament in Indianapolis is set.

Indiana (16-13, 9-7 Big Ten) will be the No. 7 seed and will play No. 10-seeded Michigan State at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The winner will play No 2 seed Maryland at the same time Friday.

The matchup seemed likely yesterday, but was not yet official, because Penn State had to beat Ohio State on Sunday to move up to the No. 10 seed. The Lady Lions lost, 89-64, which sealed OSU’s 16th conference championship.

IU and MSU played twice in the regular season, with each winning on the other’s home floor. MSU (17-12, 7-9 Big Ten) was IU’s first loss in a 1-6 start to the conference season, 68-46. But a road win at MSU on Jan. 20, 69-65, sparked the Hoosiers’ eight game winning streak.

That string of victories, which tied the longest Big Ten streak in program history, ended Saturday at Iowa.

MSU lost its next six games in conference after the second IU loss, but the Spartans have now won three out of their last four. Shay Colley, who missed the second IU game with a knee injury, played in a win over Purdue on Saturday and scored 21 points.

IU has had tough luck at the Big Ten tournament the last two years. The Hoosiers lost opening-round games to Northwestern and Purdue in consecutive seasons, both times coming off of a No. 4 finish in conference and a double bye.

  1. As it turned out with exception of Purdue vs MSU loss it seemed like several home teams won last game on their home court between 10 to 20 points.
Win or lose IU ladies need to represent themselves well.

  2. I think MSU is about as tough as anybody right now, with Shay Colley back playing well.
MSU clobbered Purdue on their Senior Day.
It’s really a weird year. We just beat the number three seed (Nebraska) here and the number four seed (Minnesota) at their place.
If we can get past Michigan State, I think there’s a good chance IU can get to the final game.
If we don’t, I think there’s a good chance MSU can get to the final game.

    GO IU!

  3. This is going to be an incredibly tough game. We have not played well in the tournament the last couple of years even though we have been the higher seed. When we beat them at their place we got off to that incredible start shooting something like 70% from the floor gaining a 20+ point lead and then they made a run at us in the 4th quarter, we were lucky to get out of there with a win. We are certainly not likely to shoot like that again! We have had trouble with teams that have their type of size, 3 girls that are 6’3” where they always have 2 on the floor at all times. We will have to play extremely well to win. Go Hoosiers!!

  4. MSU is a dangerous team for anyone to play right now. We cant let them out rebound us and we have to get back to how we were playing before the Iowa game. Both MSU and Iowa right now are no joke. Good luck ladies in the tourney- Go IU.

  5. One observation I have made when IU ladies play taller teams on inside … T.Moren and IU ladies are relentless to go inside and IU ladies get intimidated taking shots that have no chance of scoring hoping for a foul. They start throwing ball at basket rather taking lay up under control. Then, lack of offensive confidence follows including outside shooting turnovers etc. Iowa just put up a tall wall on inside. IU ladies must go inside under control with confidence , kick out, hit shots outside and inside 3 point line (10 to 18 foot shots)
For IU to win IU ladies will have to make shots and take inside shots under control and getting fouled. Then, at least 78%ft shooting. Defensively just do best you can do. I give ladies 40% chance.

  6. Win or lose with single session tickets priced at $10 guess I will see Tyra Buss and company at least one last time.

  7. No matter what happens in the Big 10 Tournament, I believe we are destined to watch IU play at home in the WNIT. Just sayin……

  8. MikeC,
I believe you’re right, and I’m happy about home games in the NIT.
But I still hold out hope for an unexpected big run in the tourney.

  9. Mike c. to be real I also will agree that most likely we will be nit bound, but if we can get hot , win a couple games , who knows, stranger things have happened. I can guarantee you one thing, the IU women have not quit nor will they.

  10. In the Buss Mich. St. interview never seen her so somber. Not even a hint of smile, very unlike her. Just lets you know she knows shes down to the end of her career especially when the next loss comes. Nice to hear Buss and Moren both say they believe this year is wide open and if they play well they can win. The fact they believe they can says it all, very positive in moving forward. Go IU.

BTW did anyone notice IU in creme’s bubble reference. “next 4 out” first mention of IU this year.
