IU baseball climbs in (most) polls

A 4-0 week at Bart Kaufman Field helped Indiana continues its climb in the national polls.

Most of them, anyway.

The Hoosiers peaked as high as No. 11 in the D1Baseball.com poll after beginning last week at No. 14. IU moved up two spots to No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches poll, it received a one-spot bump to No. 14 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and remained at No. 18 in Perfect Game’s poll.

The Hoosiers dropped one spot to No. 19 in the Baseball America Top 25.

Indiana (15-4) swept a three-game weekend series against Northern Illinois after beginning the week with a drubbing of Western Illinois.

This week’s upcoming slate will be a bit more important.

After hosting Wright State on Wednesday in the finale of its nine-game homestand, IU opens Big Ten play with a three-game series in Iowa City. Last season’s Big Ten Tournament champs, the Hawkeyes recently broke a five-game losing streak with a weekend sweep of Evansville.

IU’s pitching staff leads the conference with a 2.66 ERA, while its lineup has a league-best 19 home runs. Friday’s conference opener at Iowa is expected to include a pitching matchup between two of the league’s top pitchers, Iowa’s Nick Allgeyer (2-1, 1.76 ERA) and IU’s Jonathan Stiever (2-1, 3.86 ERA).
