IUWBB: Hoosiers advance to WNIT semis with win over UC Davis

Indiana is heading to the WNIT semifinals with a 81-66 win Sunday over UC Davis at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

IU (21-14) was led by its seniors, Tyra Buss and Amanda Cahill. Buss finished with 30 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Cahill had 24 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals. IU will next play TCU at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Assembly Hall.

This is the first time the Hoosiers have won four games to advance to the WNIT semis. This is also the first time the Hoosiers have strung together three straight seasons with 20 wins or more.

UC Davis looked threatening out of the gate. Morgan Berscht started the game with a post bucket, propelling the Aggies out to an early 7-2 lead. But a 3-pointer by Cahill started the Hoosiers’ response, and, after a UC Davis 3, IU went on an 11-0 run to lead 16-10. It was 23-15 through one period, with Cahill scoring 10 of those points.

The second quarter was all IU. A 3-pointer from Buss pushed the advantage to 31-15. A kick-out from Jaelynn Penn to Keyanna Warthen made it 39-20. Cahill finished the first half with another burst, converting a three-point play before draining a 3 from the corner.

IU led 47-27 at half. Cahill had 18 points and seven rebounds. Buss had 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. The Hoosiers also dominated the boards, 24-12. Berscht was 2-of-6 from the field for five points.

UC Davis got back to working through Berscht to start the second half, with the 6-foot-4 forward kicking out to Karley Eaton for a 3-pointer. The Aggies started the game on a 7-0 run. Another UC Davis 3 was answered by one from Penn, but Berscht came out of the timeout and scored to make it 52-39, IU.

UC Davis hit four of its first six 3-pointers to start the second half, and it was 54-45 going into a timeout with 3:11 left in the the third period. But the Hoosier response was led by Buss, who scored on a drive, a turnaround jumper and a stepback 3. IU led 62-49 heading into the final period.

  1. NIT or not, any national tournament providing positive notoriety is what Moren needs establishing direction for the future of the IU program. Fans must be ecxstatic.

  2. If IU goes ahead and claims the wnit this year, you can consider coach Moren as the true coach of the year in the big ten,, sorry Amy Williams.

  3. Again, pre-season and last year IU had trouble holding onto leads and started losing them middle of third through quarter four. However as this season developed the IU ladies have learned how to win and not lost after getting a decent lead. As long as they have not been physically out matched IU ladies have skill levels to make plays and score thus completing wins. T. Moren and company have always been hard to beat in their own gym. As season developed they have become much more competitive on road as well. This season the key has been team gel and player development in so many ways/areas

  4. Again another tremendous crowd of over 6.000 that was loud and proud to support their hoosiers!! IU’s first half was as good a half as they have played all year long! Their defense after the first 3 minutes was smothering! They consistently stole the ball and turned those steals into fast break opportunities. IU shot 53% from the floor in the first half which led to the 47-27 lead at the half. IU also out rebounded Davis 28-12 in the first half. All in all it was a dominating first half of play. Although UC-Davis made a good run in the 3rd quarter to get the lead down to 9, IU made a good run at the end of the quarter to go up around 13 or 14. We maintained that lead the rest of the way.
This team is really playing well as they have since the Michigan St, win at their place on January the 20. Since that date they have won 13 out of 15 games playing at a very high level! The freshmen have matured and the two seniors have been off the charts! The support they have gotten the last 2 games has been incredible! It’s a shame we can’t get these kinds of crowds through the course of the season.
It would be really great if we could continue to host through the rest of the tournament but, we will see?
During the postgame press conference Amanda, Tyra and coach Moren commented more than once about how much the crowds have meant to them. These girls deserve this kind of support, I only hope this continues and will carry on into next year. Go Hoosiers!!

  5. I watched TCU play South Dakota and they will full court press and trap you untill you prove you can beat it. They will cause IU a lot trouble, will be the toughest game yet.

    1. UC Davis tried the full court press near the end of the game and the IU ladies adjusted and handled it pretty well so hoping for the best. Really fun watching them play(first time admittedly) in the WNIT. We have attended all tournament games so far and I highly suggest if you care at all about IU basketball/sports you come support this awesome team.

  6. Any three of the other teams are going to be tough wins for IU ladies. IU ladies are having their own IU ladies invitational tournament.

  7. Three out of the four remaining NIT teams have played every game at home.
Unfortunately, TCU has managed to win their last two games away from home, and have played well away from home all year.
Steve W has it right. Their press is helped by the fact that their starters get lots of rest, thanks to a very deep bench. They will be hard to beat. Their style reminds me of Auburn, where 23 turnovers lead to 25 Auburn points when we played them. The good news is that we are a MUCH improved team since then.
    GO IU!

  8. I keep waiting for hoosierfan to show back up and start talking about how bad the team is and how the team is going downhill.

  9. As Moren has said you dont get invited to the nit because you stink. So these are all good teams. Some teams think yes they should have been in the NCAA but IU has proven they should have been invited even if they dont win another game. Should all of the final 4 have been invited, most likely yes. IU has been impressive with their defense beating all 4 teams between 15-20 pts. So hopefully the team has been drilled heavily on the press these last couple of days as they will need it. Im wishing the team good luck and Go Hoosiers!
