IU’s Gutman on MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List

Indiana University senior defender Andrew Gutman was named to the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List on Thursday.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female college soccer players of the year. This year’s winners will be announced on Jan. 4 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

This marks the fourth straight year the preseason watch list has included an IU player — Tanner Thompson in 2015 and ’16 (semifinalist) and eventual runner-up Grant Lillard last season.

A total of 11 Hoosiers have been named national player of the year, including coach Todd Yeagley, but the last to do so was assistant coach Danny O’Rourke in 2004.

Gutman was named second team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches in 2017 after helping lead the Indiana defense to an NCAA-best 18 shutouts and seven goals allowed. The first team All-Big Ten and All-Midwest Region selection also provided seven goals and four assists on the offensive side.

Indiana begins preseason play Sunday when Xavier visits Armstrong Stadium at 7:30 p.m. for an exhibition match.
