IUWBB: Indiana tops North Florida, 75-52

Indiana started its three-game homestand with a 75-52 win over North Florida on Sunday.

Ali Patberg led the Hoosiers with 20 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Sophomore guard Bendu Yeaney produced 14 points, while classmate Jaelynn Penn scored 12.

Indiana wanted to buy some time for Penn and Yeaney to get some rest in the week between games, and the sophomore guards were effective in the opening quarter against North Florida. While the Hoosiers were unable to hit a 3-pointer in the first half, Yeaney and Penn operated inside the arc and scored eight and six points, respectively.

After going down 4-0 in the opening moments of the quarter, the Hoosiers outscored North Florida 21-3 the rest of the period to take a 21-7 advantage into the second quarter.

Patberg, who scored five points and pulled down five rebounds in the first quarter, continued to hit the boards in the second quarter. She went into halftime with 13 points and nine rebounds, helping the Hoosiers out to a 34-20 advantage.

In the first two quarters, the Hoosiers won the rebounding battle, 28-13. It’s 12 turnovers that slowed IU’s offense down. North Florida was just 6-of-28 from the floor.

North Florida worked to reduce the Hoosiers’ lead in the third quarter, down to 39-31 with 6:05 left in the third, but IU responded with a 10-0 run. Penn hit her second 3-pointer of the quarter to make it 49-31, IU, with 2:37 left. IU led 52-35 heading into the fourth and final period.

Freshman Aleksa Gulbe scored six points in the fourth quarter and finished with nine for the game. Senior forward Kym Royster had five points and seven rebounds.

  1. I agree with Steve W, we must cut down our turnovers in order to beat a good team like Florida! We did play pretty decent today. Of course North Florida is not a very good team. We doubled them in rebounds, but of course we should have when you consider they didn’t have a starter over 6 foot tall. Patberg was phenomenal! We can only hope that she stays healthy all year because, without her we will really struggle. Florida should provide us with a real test! Can’t wait until Wednesday!! Go Hoosiers!!

  2. Nothing Ali Patberg does will surprise me, she plays the game with a burning passion, a passion to do well , a passion for her team to do well, she will do whatever it takes for her team to win. In her graduating class of 2015 ESPN had her as #1 at her guard position and #13 overall. Then she had the ACL and then pneumonia . Lets hope she is past all that and will play injury free. There is plenty of talent on this team and once they settle in and start clicking on all cylinders who knows what they will be able to do as a unit,,, Go Hoosiers!
