Ramsey one of IU’s players of the week

Peyton Ramsey has had better statistical performances.

But Saturday was clearly one of his best overall games, in terms of his ability to make plays and use his toughness to Indiana’s advantage against Michigan. He did so against the nation’s top defense, no less.

That earned Ramsey IU’s offensive player of the week honor. The redshirt sophomore quarterback threw for 195 yards and one touchdown, while completing 16 of his 35 passes. Ramsey added 51 yards on seven carries, including long scrambles of 15 and 29 yards.

“He just played with a ton of grit and just fight and getting 1st downs and extending plays and making some good throws,” IU coach Tom Allen said. “(He was) just battling and competing, leading our team.”

Defensively, defensive end Gavin Everett, and corners Raheem Layne and Andre Brown each picked up weekly honors from the coaching staff. Everett posted a career-high five tackles, all solo stops, with one pass breakup against Michigan.

Brown had four solo tackles, while Layne broke up a pass.

“Raheem and Andre had a big challenge guarding some very, very talented receivers with great length and speed and did some good things with them and really attacked the ball,” Allen said.

“And Gavin had his best game of the season production-wise. Just been so solid, a guy that’s so dependable and steady and plays hard and really plays bigger than he is physically.”

On special teams, kicker Logan Justus and running back Mike Majette picked up the weekly recognition from Allen. Justus hit field goals from 41 and 36 yards out, giving him 15 makes on the year.

“Logan Justus continues to kick the ball effectively and well,” Allen said, “and Mike Majette is just a steady guy that just gives us great decision making, protecting the football and making good choices there.”

Linebacker Aaron Casey picked up defensive scout team honors, while offensive lineman Aidan Rafferty and running back Connor Thomas were recognized on the offensive side. Linebacker Ryan Barnes was the special teams honoree.
