4 storylines for IU’s game vs. Butler

1. Morgan nearing 1,000 career points
Indiana forward Juwan Morgan needs only 15 points to become the 52nd player in IU history to score 1,000 points for his career. The senior is coming off a 15-point performance last week against Louisville, and is averaging 14 points while shooting 65 percent from inside the arc across his past three games.

2. Matchup advantage for Romeo Langford?
The 6-foot-6 star freshman will be facing a Butler backcourt that features three guards standing no taller than 6-foot-2. Kamar Baldwin and his 6-foot-6 wingspan could be the Bulldogs’ best matchup for Langford, though Butler will need to protect its junior guard from foul trouble. Langford ranks fourth in the Big Ten — and first among conference guards — with 6.8 fouls drawn per 40 minutes. Langford is averaging 19.3 points across IU’s current three-game winning streak.

3. Another close call?
Indiana is growing accustomed to navigating back-and-forth games. The Hoosiers’ past three victories have come by a total margin of five points, with IU overcoming deficits in each. So far, Indiana is proving adept at making winning plays at the end of tight ballgames, a quality that could come in handy against Butler. IU opened as a one-point favorite in this year’s Crossroads Classic matchup, with KenPom.com forecasting a 72-71 Indiana victory.

4. Higher-ranked team beware
IU and Butler renew acquaintances every other year in the Crossroads Classic — matchups that haven’t gone well for the squad ranked higher in the AP top 25. Unranked Butler toppled then-No. 1 IU in overtime in 2012 before unranked Indiana knocked off then-No. 23 Butler with a 82-73 win in 2014. In the last meeting in 2016, No. 18 Butler outlasted No. 9 Indiana, 83-78. The Bulldogs have not been ranked since the end of the 2016-17 season. IU cracked the AP rankings at No. 25 this week, making its first appearance in the poll since Jan. 2, 2017.

  1. Seems like one of the “storylines” should be Butler just activating the Duke transfer yesterday. Wow…How did Butler land a Dukie?
