IU opens week ranked 25th by Baseball America

For the first time this season, Indiana is ranked inside the top 25.

The Hoosiers open this week at No. 25 in the Baseball America Top 25, the publication revealed Monday morning. Indiana is the only Big Ten team included in Baseball America’s rankings.

D1Baseball.com has also taken notice of IU (27-13, 9-3), which has won 10 of its past 11 games. Indiana debuted at No. 23 in this week’s D1Baseball.com Top 25.

Collegiate Baseball ranks Indiana 24th nationally this week.

By winning two of three at last-place Michigan State this weekend, IU climbed into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are a half-game ahead of second-place Nebraska, which dropped its weekend series at Iowa.

The Hoosiers seem to be surging at the right time, fighting for both a Big Ten title and an NCAA Regional opportunity in Bloomington. There’s still plenty of work to do in both pursuits, but IU appears to be on the right track.

Last week, Baseball America projected Indiana as a No. 2 seed in the Louisville Regional, while D1Baseball projected IU as a No. 2 seed in the Nashville Regional.

The final month of the regular season includes a few opportunities for Indiana to build on its postseason resume. Slotted at No. 27 in the RPI, the Hoosiers have a total of five top 50 RPI games remaining against the likes of No. 26 Illinois, No. 48 Kentucky and No. 6 Louisville.

IU has four games on the schedule this week, beginning with Tuesday’s 7 p.m. matchup with Ball State at Victory Field. Indiana will host Minnesota for three games at Bart Kaufman Field beginning on Friday at 6:05 p.m.

  1. It was just a matter of time. I couldn’t believe they didn’t receive any votes in the preseason polls.

  2. I think a new coach and the loss of 4 upperclassmen to MLB may have been the reason. B1G coaches had us as pre-season 4th place in the conference. We still had a pretty good core for this season though. Not bad being the sleeping giant at times!

    1. I don’t think anyone thought that some of the freshmen would play as well as they have this year. Getting good solid play from underclassman has given this team some needed depth. Also, getting good contributions from local kids as well.
