Richardson, Lloyd earn Big Ten weekly honors

An explosive offensive weekend at Maryland helped a pair of Hoosiers land weekly honors from the Big Ten on Monday.

Outfielder Grant Richardson earned his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award in as many weeks, while utility man Matt Lloyd garnered Big Ten Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career.

Richardson is swinging one of the hottest bats in the league entering the month of April. The freshman from Fishers batted .316 on the week with three home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored, helping the Hoosiers to a weekend series win over the Terrapins.

He set new career highs with five hits, three home runs, six RBIs and four runs in Saturday’s win in College Park. Richardson also set a freshman program record with his trio of home runs, becoming the first IU player to mash three homers in a game since Logan Sowers accomplished the feat on June 3, 2017 at the Lexington Regional.

Richardson is batting .382 on the season with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 13 games.

Lloyd’s bat was just as potent at Maryland. The senior recorded 11 RBIs on seven hits, batting .412 on the weekend. He hit five home runs and two doubles, while extending his on-base streak to 21 games.

Among those with at least 80 at-bats, Lloyd leads the Hoosiers with a .316 batting average and 27 RBIs. His nine homers are second on the team.

Indiana is scheduled to play four games in Bloomington this week, beginning with Wednesday’s 4:05 p.m. contest against Wright State. IU hosts Penn State for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6:05 p.m.
