IU adds JUCO defensive tackle for 2019

The Hoosiers will have some extra help up front this fall.

Garden City (Kansas) Community College defensive tackle Demarcus Elliott committed to Indiana on Wednesday, bolstering IU’s depth in the middle of its defensive line. The 6-foot-4, 300-pound defensive lineman chose IU over offers from Chattanooga and Massachusetts, while also fielding interest from Kansas, Iowa State and West Virginia.

247 Sports considered Elliott a two-star prospect coming out of Garden City (Kan.) High School, where he recorded 81 tackles, including 18.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks as a senior in 2017.

During his freshman season at the JUCO level, Elliott recorded 19 tackles with one sack in 10 games last fall.

He will have three seasons of eligibility at Indiana.

Elliott provides crucial depth at defensive tackle, where IU has been looking to add extra bodies. Redshirt sophomore Juan Harris and redshirt junior Jerome Johnson project as starters for IU in 2019, with the Hoosiers still trying to piece together a two-deep behind them now that rotational players such as Mike Barwick, Kayton Samuels, Brandon Wilson and Ja’Merez Bowen are no longer with the program.

Elliott’s commitment comes less than a week after he made an official visit to Bloomington.

  1. After watching the highlights, it looks like IU has picked up a pretty good player here. For a man his size, Elliott seems to have really good agility and athleticism. He goes from side line to side line with apparent ease. Adding his kind of size to go along with Harris gives us a couple of 300+ pounders up the middle. Hopefully this will make us hard to run on. Good job coach Allen. Keep up the good work. It all starts with solid recruiting! Go Hoosiers!!

  2. He looks like a pretty good recruit. When you count in the “portal” players as leaving, how many scholarships does IU now have open?

  3. Alot to like about that highlight tape. He looks raw but the athletic traits are there. Hopefully they can develop him into a solid contributor.

  4. I found a JUCO site that has Elliott rated as the 17th best DT. FWIW they had Juan Harris as the #5 DT.

  5. He certainly looks like he is talented and may be able to help the Hoosiers in 2019. I hope he is willing to work hard and listen to coaching because he can be a beast on the DL if he does.

Fishspinner you are right about the athletic traits his film shows about him.

  6. I especially liked the parts where he was beating up the guys wearing the Meatchicken helmets.

  7. What ever happened to LeShaun Minor? I don’t see him listed on the IU roster anymore.

  8. He looks good on his highlight tapes, but who doesn’t? I wonder why no other major programs recruited a young man with this size out of JC? I’m hoping he’s a late-bloomer and that this will be a great success story two or three years from now.

    1. IU is thinner than I thought at DT. Whether he’s ready or not, he might be apart of the rotation on day one. I think we need a grad transfer asap to sure up the position.
