IUWBB: Penn to try out for U.S. Pan Am team

Indiana sophomore Jaelynn Penn has been selected as one of 36 athletes to try out for the U.S. Pan American Games women’s basketball team.

Trials to select the 12-member team will occur from May 16-20 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Those selected will return for training camp from July 23-Aug. 5. The 2019 Pan American Games will take place from Aug. 6-10 in Lima, Peru.

Penn was one of six Big Ten players selected for the tryout, along with Iowa’s Kathleen Doyle, Purdue’s Karissa McLaughlin, Minnesota’s Destiny Pitts, Maryland’s Stephanie Jones, and Northwestern’s Lindsey Pulliam.

Penn, a 5-foot-10 guard from Louisville, Ky., was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2018-19, finishing with averages of 13.9 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest. At the same time, she dealt with a lingering ankle sprain the entirety of that campaign.

IU coach Teri Moren said Penn was taking time to rest in early April but she would have to ramp up her training to be able to compete in the trials.

“We gave her the choice, it’s up to you, you can continue to rest, but if you want to do this, then this is an opportunity,” Moren said, “and she’s pretty excited.”

Along with the six players trying out, the coaching staff will be headed up by Michigan State’s Suzy Merchant. Former IU and current Buffalo coach Felisha Legette-Jack will serve as an assistant, as well as Mississippi State’s Vic Schaefer.

The U.S. will face Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Paraguay, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands during the August tournament.

Penn isn’t the first athlete to try out for a national team during Moren’s tenure. Tyra Buss was one of 40 players who tried out for the U.S. Under-23 team in the summer of 2017. She did not make the squad.

“That’s a big deal for our kids to have the opportunity to do things like that and represent USA Basketball,” Moren said.

  1. Although I am really proud of her getting this opportunity, I was really hoping she would take the off season to get 100% healed up. I certainly hope she is ok and does well!! Go Hoosiers!

  2. Best of luck to her at the tryouts.
I don’t remember who the last player from IU that was invited to these tryouts was before Penn and Buss.

    Maybe Jori Davis?
    Anyone know?

  3. I agree with Mike C.
Hopefully Jaelynn can both play and heal.
Quite an honor to be invited, I would think.
