Saalfrank, Gordon selected in 6th round

Indiana junior pitchers Andrew Saalfrank and Tanner Gordon were each selected in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.

The Hoosier hurlers were drafted five picks apart, with Saalfrank going to the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 182nd overall selection and Gordon going to the Atlanta Braves with the 187th overall pick.

Saalfrank, the 2019 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, entered the NCAA Tournament second in the Big Ten in strikeouts per nine innings, third in wins, and fifth in ERA and strikeouts. The junior struck out 10 or more hitters in five of his 12 starts this season, serving as IU’s Sunday starter for the bulk of the season.

Gordon, IU’s Saturday starter, allowed three hits or fewer in seven of his 16 starts and entered the NCAA Tournament ranked first in the Big Ten in WHIP, and third in strikeout-to-walk ratio and walks per nine innings.

The JUCO transfer struck out a career-high 12 batters against Iowa on March 23, earning Big Ten pitcher of the week honors.

The 2019 MLB Draft concludes Wednesday with rounds 11 through 40.
