Creek, Abell team up to win TBT opener

WICHITA, Kansas — For the first time in six years, Maurice Creek and Remy Abell are teammates again.

The pair of former Indiana Hoosiers teamed up for Sideline Cancer in The Basketball Tournament (TBT) on Thursday night, leading the sixth-seeded squad to an 87-63 upset of third-seeded Self Made at Charles Koch Arena.

Creek scored 23 points, including the game-ending 3-pointer, to lead all scorers. He was 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-9 from 3.

Creek, who transferred from Indiana in 2013 and spent his final season of eligibility at George Washington, is coming off his fifth season in professional basketball overseas. He played two years in the Netherlands, one in Denmark, one in Finland and last year was the leading scorer (16.4 ppg) for BC Kyiv Basket in the Ukrainian league.

His one-time IU teammate, Abell, who also left the Hoosiers after the 2013 season to finish his final two season at Xavier, added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists for Sideline Cancer. Abell played two years in Finland and last year in Hungary, where his Oroszlany squad is moving up from the B Division to the A Division in 2019.

Sideline Cancer advances to Saturday’s 4 p.m. second-round game.

The only other Hoosier scheduled to participate in the TBT this year was Earl Calloway, who did not play as his Southern Gentlemen squad was eliminated last weekend.

Fitzner to Denmark

Recent IU grad Evan Fitzner has signed a contract to play professionally in Denmark.

Fitzner, a 6-foot-10 grad transfer from St. Mary’s who averaged 3.5 points in 31 games last season, will play for Team FOG Naestved in the top Danish basketball league in the 2019-20 season.

  1. Fantastic!!! Thanks for this story, Jeremy.

Two guys who should have remained Hoosiers. Outstanding men and true winners.

    Random entertainment(4:20 mark).

  2. The ‘Abell Nursery and Landscaping’ ad has finally come home…..I knew these ads had a Scoop purpose. No dirt on Remy Abell ….The young man had solid roots. Really not mulch else you can say on the subject. Doesn’t seem soil lawn ago when he was shrubin’ in as one hell of a sixth man. Crean trimmed him off the roster…Never understood that move. Remy was a high energy kid …He wasn’t afraid to go in with the trees…Rarely was he exhausted to the point of being bushed.

Now that we’ve figured out Abell Nursery and Landscaping’s home on Scoop, I was wondering if “water features” listed in their services means I could have an Abell Creek installed in my backyard…as well as my backcourt?
