Cronk named to Outland Trophy watch list

Indiana senior Coy Cronk has been added to the Outland Trophy’s preseason watch list.

That’s the fourth IU football player to make a preseason list, following center Hunter Littlejohn (Rimington), running back Stevie Scott (Doak Walker and Maxwell awards) and receiver Nick Westbrook (Allstate Good Works Team).

Cronk is one of 83 blockers currently under consideration for the Outland Trophy, which honors the country’s top interior lineman. Cronk has started at left tackle since his freshman year, appearing in 36 games. He has missed only one game due to injury.

The winner of the Outland Trophy  will be announced during ESPN’s college football awards show on Dec. 12, broadcast from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

  1. Two OL on the watch list and two in NFL training camps, maybe coach Hiller is doing better than many think. I know it is good to have Cronk and Littlejohn on watch list and if they become finalist this season IU is having a very good season. IU needs the OL to have a good season to let the offense excel with the talent that is on the team.

    1. V13,
We should not understate the value of an experienced lineman such as Cronk who hopefully will still be in consideration for the Outland by season’s end. Even more important as another article mentioned is his taking the initiative to mentor the younger linemen, in particular Caleb Jones. I think there is an enormous amount of talent in Jones and it may not have come at a better time if we consider something very important. If memory serves Caleb Jones has been penciled in as the starter at right tackle.

If memory also serves this is not normally quite as important a position as it may be this year. If you have a left handed QB starting, guess who has the blindside responsibilities? If MP is your starter at QB, Caleb Jones suddenly becomes an extremely important piece of the puzzle and in position to become a breakout star lineman in his own right.
