Westbrook added to Wuerffel Trophy watch list

Indiana senior wide receiver Nick Westbrook has been added to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list.

Westbrook, who is also a nominee for the Allstate Good Works Team, is one of five Hoosiers to be placed on a watch list this preseason. He is the second to be put on two lists, joining running back Stevie Scott (Doak Walker and Maxwell awards).

The Wuerffel Trophy honors players who combine “exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievements.” Among Westbrook’s many volunteer activities, he has worked with Everybody Plays, Camp Riley, Andrew Luck’s “Change The Play,” Generosity Feeds, and the 2nd & 7 Foundation.

Semifinalists for the award will be announced November 5, with finalists coming on November 18. The winner will be named at the National Football Foundation’s festivities in New York City on December 10.

Here is an updated list of IU’s watch list honorees:

Maxwell Award – Stevie Scott III
Allstate Good Works Team – Nick Westbrook
Doak Walker Award – Stevie Scott III
Rimington Trophy – Hunter Littlejohn
Outland Trophy – Coy Cronk
Lou Groza Award – Logan Justus
Wuerffel Trophy – Nick Westbrook

  1. Has T.A. turned the whole team at all positions to awards list? Good for pre-season self-esteem.

  2. Javon Swinton from VA just committed to the Hoosiers. He is a WR from the area [maybe the same school] a 3 star athlete.

It does seem if IU has players on every watch list. It will be nice if our QB can get Westbrook and Hale up to Westbrooks level in 2016. IU has the players to compete with the top teams in the B1G East but do they now have the OC , depth, and good fortune to win some of those games. This could be a much better season if a few things go the Hoosiers way despite the tough home – away schedule.

    1. Glad you mentioned good fortune. I don’t believe in curses, but it seems that the only breaks IUFB ever gets are bad. The untimely demise of Coach Hep being the most prominent example recently, although the injury to Penix last year ranks up there, too. To paraphrase Tevye from “Fiddler on the Roof,” would it mess up some divine, eternal plan for IUFB to catch some good breaks this season?

    1. t, it would be great to have our QB have such a good year he makes a watch list next season. I think it will take a new starter for that to happen but which ever one plays that well I will be pleased at the QB play.

    2. t,
I agree with you and V13, it would be nice to see a qb on the watch list next year. It doesn’t really matter to me which of the 3 candidates for the job wins the starter’s role, just so long as the qb play takes a quantum leap over the last few years, especially the last two years.
