Hoosiers add DE Mayala for 2020

Indiana added another piece to its 2020 recruiting class Monday in Georgia defensive end Jalen Mayala.

Mayala, from Dacula, Ga., is considered a three-star prospect by 247Sports and held offers from Purdue, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Virginia, and Syracuse, among others.

What stands out immediately about Mayala is his size. He stands 6-foot-6 and 218 pounds. At Archer High, he not only put his hand in the dirt as a defensive end but also stood in a two-point stance quite often, either rushing the passer on the edge or standing a few yards back as playing the pass or the run as a true linebacker.

Mayala is the second defensive end brought in for 2020. West Washington grad Caleb Murphy is signed and enrolled early at IU. Also enrolled is the lone defensive tackle commit of this class, Damarjhe Lewis.

If you want to see Mayala in action, here’s a link to his highlight.

    1. Thanks for the verification IU92,

I had just asked for verification of the report on another thread. Great day for the defense, mixed emotions on PR leaving. I understand it may be time and hopefully he will land in a conference which closer matches his skill levels. Fresno State maybe?

  1. This kid has all of the physical tools to be great! Get him in the strength and conditioning program asap! Then coach him up!

  2. You have to love that height! I’m guessing that his relatively low weight is one of the reasons why he was not rated higher. But increase that by 25 lbs. and you may have a beast in a year or two.

When you beat out Purdue, Virginia, Arizona and Syracuse, you probably have a solid recruit with lots of upside.

  3. A great pickup for IU to bolster their 2020 class. He will have a year or two to gain weight and become a beast on pass rush if he continues to develop. I hope by this coming season Norris has gained the weight and skill to be a very good pass rusher. IU is working hard to change the issue with the defensive front having a pass rush and I hope it happens in 2020 and beyond.

  4. A nice pick up who will have to put on 45 to 50 lbs to play. Hopefully he can do that in a year or so. Sure hope the staff gets a couple more commits for the second signing period.

Anyone else notice how many recruits Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Maryland already have committed for 2021. The first 3 already have 7-9 commits each including a number of 4*’s and even a 5*. TA and his staff better get moving on 2021!

      1. 2 points BP,
        1. This kid is a 2020 commit, signing day is next month.
        2. TA’s track record on holding commits has been pretty good.

  5. Good point, think. I don’t recall IU losing a commit in the 2019 class. Did any of IU’s verbally committed recruits get poached in the 11th hour last year?
