Abell, Creek advance in The Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A pair of former Indiana University basketball standouts emerged victorious in their opening game of The Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Nationwide Arena.

Remy Abell and Mo Creek, who both started their careers at IU and finished them elsewhere, were key contributors as No. 22 seed Sideline Cancer rallied in the fourth quarter for a 93-91 win over No. 11 seed Team Hines in a first-round game of the winner-take-all $1 million event.

The format features the Elam Ending, which sets a target score with four minutes to go and eliminates the remaining time on the clock. Sideline Cancer took its first lead of the final period at 84-82 at the four-minute mark, setting the winning score at 92.

Abell, who finished with 17 points and three rebounds, had one of two 3-point attempts to win it for Sideline Cancer carom off the heel of the rim. With the score tied at 91, former Central Michigan standout Marcus Keene drilled a pullup jumper from 17 feet to cap his 29-point performance and send Team Hines home.

Creek added 13 points, four rebounds and two assists for the Sideline Cancer, which advances to play sixth-seeded Team Challenge ALS on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. All games are televised on ESPN or ESPN2.

Another former Hoosier, Luke Fischer, will play for Golden Eagles, the Marquette alumni team, tonight at 9 p.m., while Jordan Crawford, formerly of Indiana and Xavier, will play on Thursday at 4 p.m. with Overseas Elite.
