IU women add Thursday game

The Big Ten Conference announced a pair of schedule updates for the Indiana women’s basketball team on Sunday night.

The No. 16 Hoosiers (9-3, 7-1 B1G), who were off 11 days prior to Sunday’s 74-61 win at Northwestern after games against Rutgers and Michigan State were postponed by COVID issues in those programs, will now host No. 14 Ohio State (8-1, 4-0) on Thursday night on the Big Ten Network at 8 p.m. in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. IU was originally slated for a mid-week bye and would have to wait another week to play again. The Buckeyes have a trio of games to make up due to their own COVID pause, plus a postponement with Rutgers, so this game was moved up from the original date of Feb. 4 to allow OSU to slot in a makeup game with Iowa on that date.

Also, Indiana’s game on Sunday vs. Michigan State has been updated to a 4 p.m. tip at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The game will be carried on Big Ten Plus.

Holmes honor roll

Indiana sophomore Mackenzie Holmes was named to the Big Ten honor roll on Monday after recording her fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win at Northwestern on Sunday. Michigan’s Naz Hillmon was Player of the Week after scoring a school-record 50 points against Ohio State last week.

  1. OSU 88-Mary 86, a seriously good watch, of interest: Owusu with 33 points, 9 assists, Benson with 7 three pointers, and yet Maryland loses (because Owusu also had 6 to’s and missed 12 shots, and those two players got next-to-no help from other Terps, like they all had visitors’ road disease).
But still, OSU had to play great to beat a down-performing Maryland team, and they did. These games are THE Tournament for self-penalizing OSU under their rules investigation.
Greene-Sheldon were their dynamic duo selves, although Greene like Owusu also had 6 to’s. Braxton Miller was OSU’s prime defender on Owusu and made two 3’s right at winning time among her 18 points. Juhasz had just 6 points but earned her keep by pulling down 16 rebounds. OSU’s bench has some willing brawlers.
By Tourneys time, remember Maryland will return a “big Angel” who’ll provide them a true post player.
If you saw OSU in their loss to Nebraska, that OSU team bore no resemblance to this one tonight. OSU got motivated and better against Michigan, and still better tonight.
To beat OSU Thursday night, we’ll have to defend them better than Maryland did tonight, and hope they’re not as comfy on the road in The Hall.
BTN WBB is peaking at a perfect time to help us get through this viral winter.

  2. I watched the game and was totally unimpressed with Maryland’s effort.
Maryland has a very short bench, and looked totally exhausted by the end of the game to me.
Poor Owusu and Benzan each played a full 40 minutes.
I’m no basketball guru, but I think IU’s depth is probably why we made such a strong comeback against Maryland (33 IU points in the last quarter), and why we should be able to finish games strong against teams that are only six or seven deep.
    GO IU!

  3. I was actually impressed with both teams , O. S. had a nice lead at the end but Mary, turned them over 3 times in a row on out of bounds and nearly blew the game. IU will need to be on their A game to be able to win on thurs.

  4. Not much has been said about it but Penn looked refreshed and like she felt 100%, not sure if she is but did look like it and IU needs her to be in this run of games that will be quite competitive with so many good teams in the conf. As was mentioned on the telecast no other conf. is as strong as the B1G from top to bottom with so many ranked and good teams.

  5. I look for Penn to have mentality and physically to finish strong her senior year.
If Patberg can keep her emotional head in check she will finish strong as well.

    1. Swing and a miss. IU didn’t score 81. 4th quarter zone, OSU forced 17 or 18 IU Ladies turnovers and IU couldn’t put ball in basket enough as often happens against the best teams. Same o same o. OSU Ladies took care of basketball. IU Ladies program is plateaued into a top 3 or 4 team in big ten (not just this year but is kinda where they are at year after year over a short period of years).

  6. t you have more faith than I do in this game , but hope you are correct. If IU wins may say a little about the home court discussion that has been bounced back and forth of recent.
