NCAA tourney games at Assembly Hall revealed

Kelvin Sampson is coming to Bloomington.

Dates, times, and host sites for this week’s NCAA tournament games were revealed Sunday night, and one of the matchups slated for Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is No. 2-seeded Houston versus No. 15 seed Cleveland State on Friday.

Sampson, of course, was Indiana’s head coach for two seasons from 2006-2008. His tenure at IU ended via resignation following NCAA violations.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s NCAA tournament is being held exclusively in the state of Indiana, including games at Assembly Hall and Purdue’s Mackey Arena. The bulk of the contests will be played in Indianapolis, including matchups at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium, Farmers Coliseum, and Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Assembly Hall will be the site for two play-in games on Thursday, Texas Southern against Mount Saint Mary’s (5:10 p.m.) and Appalachian State versus Norfolk State (8:40 p.m.).

On Friday, No. 6 seed Texas Tech will face No. 11 Utah State in the afternoon (1:45 p.m.), followed by Houston and Cleveland State (7:15 p.m.) in the nightcap. Texas Tech is coached by Chris Beard, a former assistant of Bob Knight.

The last set of games on Saturday features No. 9 seed St. Bonaventure versus No. 8 LSU (1:45 p.m.), followed by No. 13 Ohio against No. 4 Virginia (7:15 p.m.). The first matchup features LSU’s Trendon Watford, the younger brother of former Hoosier forward Christian Watford. The second game that day brings Tony Bennett, Virginia’s head coach, to Bloomington. His sister, Kathi, was the head coach of IU women’s basketball program from 2000-05.

  1. If any teams forget uniforms I suppose they know where they can borrow some.
What place does Gonzaga or Creighton finish in big ten? How many games do each of them loose?

  2. t,
I only know one thing for sure.
They absolutely would NOT have gone through the Big10 undefeated.

  3. Bizarre. One team from Indiana. Watched Arkansas couple nights ago vs. LSU. A little brain freeze. “Justin Smith dunks over Watford” and “Watford around Smith for the basket”, TV guy comments. Justin had 16 points the night before. Not sure his points vs. LSU. He did have one play that may reflect his IU background. A breakaway unopposed dunk, that missed followed by some bench time. TV guy noted he would be out of game for a short time if Arkansas had ant chance to win

I’d bet about anything – if IU and Georgia both made the tourney. they would have been scheduled to play in Bloomington.

  4. Keeping football perspective….T. Davis a 4 star recruit per rivals 2022 QB recruit less than 50 miles from IU eliminates IU when his list was narrowed to 9 including 5 SEC schools. IU does have 2021 QB recruit coming in a 4 star per rivals. However, IU media source states T. Davis is a 3 star recruit. So the question is does an Indiana high school qb get a 1 star demotion for elimination of IU football on his recruiting list? Yes, it could be that why come to IU since McCulley will be a year ahead of you? However, it also shows the challenge for IU football recruiting….because more good QB help is needed Post Penix and Tuttle besides McCulley….T. Davis though not the only answer it would have the makings for a good QB competition and DEPTH that is much needed at IU…plus T. Davis could possibly win starting QB job at IU at some point. If he can’t win starting job at IU post Penix…how is he going to win starting job in SEC or UCLA etc where there is much more QB depth. I am not sold on how good McCulley will be. Then, does T. Davis end up as what has been NOW several other Indiana high school quarterbacks going to programs and getting lost in the shuffle for disappointment in their college football careers. On the other hand T. Davis didn’t lead IU football on by keeping IU on his list just to be FAKE like others have done . That way IU can focus elsewhere.

  5. Will past Gonzaga appear at some point in tournament around elite 8, maybe final 4 and schedule strength rear it’s ugly head putting its basketball program back in perspective? Gonzaga is in recent years in the area top 10 team…this year maybe top 5 to 10 team. Without seeing them play probably as usual top 10 team.

A.M. out…New A.D. is putting his stamp on athletic department (aggressively vs conservative)
